I was not interested in this movie to begin with because of the mundane subject shown through the previews. This subject has been played around with in bollywood for many years in the past. The most famous ones that remind us of similar plot are Silsila and Abhiman. The story for KANK is based on past interval from Silsila and Abhiman put together.

The conflict between Rani and Abhishek is superficial, there is no clear conflict. The only reason for their breakup seems to be that Rani never loved him. This is trying to show that you can't love a person even if you spend couple of years with them. In addition, the conflict between Shahrukh and Preety is very cliched. Shahrukh being very unsuccessful and his wife being successful reminds us of Abhiman's Amitabh and Jaya's problems. The way that Shahrukh khan ends up having an extra marital affair with Rani reminds us of Silsila where Amitabh and Rekha have affair despite being married.

Some of the scenes also reminds us of Silsila. For example, Shahrukh and Rani secretly meet and Preety just happens to walk on the same way reminds us of situations in Silsila where Amitabh and Rekha go shopping and someone catches them.

The music wasn't very impressive either. The Shankar ehsan loy combo is bringing out music that sounds same but is not that hip anymore. Their trick is to get a catchy english phrase like Rock and roll, its the time to disco and where is the party tonight and make a song out of it. It was not creative nor that amusing because tabla sounds odd in a song that has english words. The title track is the only track that seems to stay with you after the movie is over.

Another flaw of the film was that the characters were just too surreal. I think it was unnecessary to have such bigger than life characters. Having these types of characters only make us not believe in the conflict presented. The only new aspect of this film was its ending goes against the conventional bollywood ending. In the past, no matter how bad the relationship was, in the conclusion the wedding lock remains locked. Therefore, I think that the only thing Johar did was come up with a way to make divorse look better than unstable marriage.

Simply put, its the same story with a different setting and differentsituation with the same theme. I think Karan Johar is losing his touchin his recent films, for example KAAL.
