KANK - No Show

I walked into the theatre (PVR , Mulund) on Independence Day thinking I would not get tickets for KANK but there were hardly any people at the counter. Got the tickets of my choice and went in for another surprise , more than half the hall was empty. So much for a HIT movie.

After 3.5 hours - I walked out of the movie feeling what the heck did I just see ?

The story in short - SRK plays a footballer whose career is cut short by an accident married to Preity who plays the Editor of a Fashion Mag in NY. In the same city - there is a PR firm owner (AB Jr) and his confused wife (Rani) with his Sexy Dad (AB Sr).

SRk becomes bitter about every thing because of his accident and wallows in self pity all the time, ignoring his wife and her love and the kid too. At the other end , Rani simply ignores Abhi's advances for reasons best known to her.

Both families meet and SRK and Rani (who had met earlier before Rani's wedding) go straight into an extra marital affair breaking up both families and themselves too before going onto find each other in the end.

Well the characters of both SRK and Rani are confused. Both get into a relation because they can talk to each other or because both have low self esteem or because they are confused ?

What stopped SRK from talking to Preity ? Caring a bit more for his family and his loving wife.

What stopped Rani from reciprocating to Abhi's advances (her husband) and give in to SRK's advances ?? Rani doesnt want to have sex with her husband while she walks miles in the rain to get to a hotel to do it with another man, quite a spirit of adventure I say.

Why is SRK's character always angry ? Couldnt quite get it why he kept going at all for his accident when it clearly was his fault.

Ultimately the reasons feel silly for having an extra marital affair. To top it the comic scenes when SRK tries to massage Preity and Rani walks in with a whip are overdone , seemed like Kjo just wanted to show an half hearted attempt by both to work on their relationships.

So in the end it seemed Karan Johar wanted to make a film about infidelity and made it , making a weak attempt at justifying the reasons for the affair. I would have been pleased if he had taken a stronger stance and shown attraction between SRK and Rani that leads them to an affair. And he stretches that to close to 3.5 hours. I saw people walk out 15 mins before the movie was over. Maybe if karan had developed Abhi and Preity's track a bit more the movie could have salvaged something.

Performances

-------------------

SRK / Rani - People say his best performance. I say its his worst in a Karan Johar film. Same expressions, same dialouge delivery, same crying style....come on both of you we have seen it all

Preity - Hardly there but effective in scenes which required her to be emotional.

Abhishek - Actually performed quite well in the emotional scenes.

AB Sr. - What do I say about him ? A ridiculously written role for him and this man ROCKS in that. Amazing performance - he has just 2 serious scenes but just watch how he manages to change the whole mood of the theatre in his sequence where he remembers his wife.

And what was Arjun Rampal doing in the movie ?

Music- Just about ok for a Karan Johar film.

Overall a disspointing effort from K Jo.
