JURM

Jurm....the movie that was a hit in the year 1990 and starred Vinod Khanna, Meenakshi, Sangeeta Bijlani and Shafu Inamdar. It was directed by Mahesh Bhatt and produced by Mukesh Bhatt, released in July 1990.

The story is complex. It revolves around the life of a police inspector and his wife and the many problems (situations) he endures in the middle of case of a crime committed earlier in the story, and his extra-marital relationship with another woman, an eye-witness of the crime!

Inspector Shekhar (Vinod Khanna) is a very serious-minded and mature person. He is also very honest and always tries making the best of himself to contribute to the image of the Police Force. All thieves and vagrants are always afraid of him, and they try to avoid him. Some politicians also envy him as he is not the sort of person who will ever go corrupt. He is married to Meena (Meenakshi) and has a young daughter with her.

Then, there is a murder one evening and we`re introduced to Geeta (Sangeeta Bijlani), the witness of the crime. The killer notices her and knows her physically. He tries to kill her that day, but she makes a narrow escape. Thereon, the killer follows her everywhere and keeps an eye on her to seize every opportunity available to kill her.

However, Geeta decides not to go back to America (where she came from), and to collaborate with the police into solving the crime. Inspector Shekhar takes full responsibilty of this case, taking into consideration the fragile situation of Miss Geeta. Geeta soon gets a natural liking (maybe LOVE) to Inspector Shekhar who has no choice, but to stay close to her every night, as she sought police protection.

At one instance, Geeta has an affair with the Police Inspector, and this time their relationship gets even more serious. When Inspector Shekhar`s wife gets to know about it, this forms an obvious clash to their relationship and they get separated for a while.

Inspector Shekhar is compelled to stay with Geeta for a some more time, and this further extends the clash between his wife Meena and himself. Meanwhile, the killer tries taking advantage of the situation and attempts killing both Inspector Shekhar and Geeta, but in both, he fails rather unprofessionally.

After a few fights and some more killings, the definite truth surfaces......There are other Police Inspectors and even the Top-Dog of the Police Department who are also equally involved in the initial murder. The problem is that they all conspire to cover up the whole investigation. Fortunately, due to the cunningness and experience of Inspector Shekhar, they all fail respectively and further questions about trusting the police department are raised.

Finally, Inspector Shekhar reunites with his wife and Miss Geeta returns to America after helping him solve the crime...........the film maybe ends in a lighter ending than originally expected!

----------------------------------------------~THE END~ ---------------------------------------------------

Jurm was a movie which came out with a new storyline at the time, and it was somehow, quite unusual. I loved the music by Rajesh Roshan for the movie, and especially the song; Jab Koi Baat Bigad Jaaye..., which was extremely popular and topped the charts back then. Even today, the songs are unique, yet very simple! (Thank the expereinced artists of the early 90`s for that!)

The atmosphere as a whole in the film was very mature (that`s why many children won`t like it), and had an understanding towards the society we lived in. It was not only violent, but also quite romantic as the songs showed the emotional part of the movie`s situations. Jurm deserved it`s title, yet it could have been better with a sharper and digitally restored image, and crisper editting. Film direction by Mahesh Bhatt was excellent.

JURM IS A MATURE AND VIOLENT MOVIE: VISA 15
