I really want to like this movie. I love the original Jurassic Park, I like Lost World, and I love Pratt. But this movie is such a disappointment I don't even know where to start.
The original Jurassic Park is a cautious tale, it's about the unforeseen consequences of our actions even when we meant well. It's about we shouldn't play god. Granted, it was a pretty cliche, over used plot line, but a well executed plot line nonetheless. What is Jurassic World about? From beginning to end, I have no idea what is this movie's message. What does it want to say? Family? Courage? Human should maintain good relationships with pack animals? Career woman should get married and have children? The plot line is. how did Dr. Malcolm put it. "a big pile of s-t".
So we have a boring, predictable and stupid plot, the characters didn't fare any better. You have Owen, your typical action adventure hero who stands for the moral compass and always do the right thing; you have Claire, your typical action adventure annoying female lead who believe she can do everything, but still need the hero to teach her the real meaning of life(aka, family and kids); you have your typical bad guy with typical bad guy death; typical millionaire, typical scientist. It's like someone flip through "movie character book" and decide to find the most cliched characters and put them in this movie.
The worst part is, the director and Bryce Dallas Howard(who played Claire) made a point to emphasis how Claire is a strong female character. Really? Which part of this character speaks of "strong female character"? Sure she "runs" the park. But as the strong and powerful "woman in charge", she still need the male hero to each her life lesson. And the little show she did, tying her clothing, folding her sleeves, that's absolutely absurd. It is a blatant sexist joke that make fun of "strong women", it's like saying "yeah, there's a strong woman, she fold her sleeves and s-t, but it's still the man who do all the work".
I hate her. with all my feminist heart.
But I can deal with a non-existing plot, I can deal with one dimensional characters, after all, it's what I'd expect from similar action adventures movies. The most disappointing part of this movie is that it failed, quite miserably to impress. The original Jurassic Park had impressed me. I remember the part where I first saw the dinosaurs roaming around the lake, with Jurassic park theme music. That's the moment when you feel so happy that there's such magic called motion picture.
Jurassic World has no such moment. It tried, but failed. 22 years later, Jurassic World can't even impress me with its much advance CG. Now I'd say this movie had failed in almost every aspect of movie making.
In the end, it's just another uninspiring movie with bad plot and bad characters. The magic of original Jurassic Park is forever lost.
