This advice refers to libraries. Why join a library? Isn't it a bunch of hassle? Aren't there a lot of fees to pay? Is it a pain in the neck to return books on time? Who in their right mind would want to add more chaos to their life? Count me in!
I have been going to libraries ever since I can remember. When I was little I would go to storytime and afterschool activities. To be sure I have met up with my share of annoyances. Like the library saying that you didn't return a book when you're positive you did! To be a member of your local library requires a few things. One is to live in the nearby vincinity, or most libraries will charge you a fee if you live too far away, and besides, the closer you are, the more likely you are to return your books.
The main requirement for being able to possess a library is responsibility. You have to take care of your books and return them on time or you're going to owe money. And believe me, those little fees add up. It doesn't take too much effort and the benefits are unlimited.
Can't figure out how to turn your computer on? Run down to the library and pick up a copy of'Computers for dummies'. Want to teach your dog how to roll over? You'll find at least one how-to book at the library. I recently picked up a book on how to box and can now pack a punch with the rest of them!(Well, almost). You can learn about history, geography, trigonometry and psychology. Want to know why your eyes always close when you sneeze? Chances are you'll find something at the library to fulfill your most dire needs.
And it doesn't stop at non-fiction. Your favorite novel, your favorite author, may very well be at your local library. I found all 66 mystery novels by Agatha Christie at my library. I've almost completed John Grisham's collection and there are so many books to choose from. Even kids will find a vast assortment of books at thier leisure.
And it doesn't stop at books. I can look at copies of old newspapers, rent videos and cds. I recently took out a copy of Tchaichovsky's greatest hits that I couldn't get anywhere else.
These are all the facts. Of course the library has to be good for all the information above to be true. I've seen libraries where all they have is a three week old'Wall Street Journal' and a copy of'Moby Dick'(okay, so maybe it doesn't get that bad).
Sometimes the librarians can get a bit possesive. I've been to some libraries where they make you sign your name in blood and use your children as deposits.(Okay, a little exaggerating).
But the overall benefits are worth the efforts and you can do anything once you have your library card(Except maybe withdraw money from an atm machine)
