Have you had enough of the predictable music in this era? Is hip hop, bhangra, and retro, sort of your guilty pleasure?

Johnny Gaddar is an answer straight from god's mouth. More of retro, actually, and am not complaining. I mean, I am a fan ofS-E-L, but I was getting tired of the predictibility of their music of late. Listen to Salaam-E-Ishq, Heyy Babyy (what's with the "y" overdoseSajidd Khann?), they REEK of Dil Chahta Hai. Jhoom Barabar Jhoom was good, but it wasn't refreshing. I was almost screaming in my head for the dudes to give me a break and that's when they sent my way Johnny Gaddar in a "One-tight-slap" way :|

Johnny Gaddar - This track stays with you. "Chhoti si zindagi gehri si jeb hai, baaki toh janeman baaton seb hain" is a lukewarm attempt atGulzar style lyrics writing, but the music definitely raises the level. The singing is also pretty average, but then the MUSIC. The arrangement, jazzy, is VERY VERY good. This song is repeated in many avatars -Johnny In the House (techno style), which is none too bad, but doesn't have the staying power of the original; Johnny BreakBeat Mera Naam however, is pretty cool. It has a "Paathshala" from RDB hangover, but interspersing it with the old Dharmendra dialogs was, funnily enough, unique and eccentric.

Move Your Body - Ah! This one is my favorite. Not the lyrics, mind you. There are no significant lyrics anyway. I mean, "Life is a Gamble Boyz" shoyz, what lyric is THAT? It is purely the magic of the music again. Have you chanced upon the "Glassy Family" song playing on MTV a couple months back? Its the same girl that sings. Her strong husky voice does the trick along with Shankar Mahadevanand SEL's "Clever" sounds. And I must admit, I quite like the eccentric video. The remix that comes later is decent.

Dhoka - The scream at the onset is annoying, but the rest is techno-lounge kind of a sound, and the voice is silken that makes the song bearable. Mind you, this song has a oft repeated ring to it. The "Ola Ola" part, I reckon, is almost the same as "Halo Halo" from the Arjun Rampal dudI See You.

Revenge of the 70's - A dialog from the movie followed by Don kind of music. Hats off to SEL. This is such a nice device for the movie as well.

The Caper Begins - This is VERY Cowboy Bebop, if you know what I am talking about. Have you heard the music from the anime series Cowboy Bebop? No? You have no idea what you are missing, so its ok . Since you have no idea, I mean. Did I say that this is VERY Cowboy Bebop? ;)

Toss - Techno again. I kind of imagine Neil Mukesh running away with a bagful of cash while his girlfriend lies beaten, bleeding back in some filthy hotel bathroom. Johnny on the run? Maybe, but the track is called Toss and it is pretty snazzy.

Confidence - I think it is Lata Mangeshkar that they play for a bit in the beginning. The music is mid-eastern, but the arrangement is different. Suspenseful sound. Hint of hope and happiness too. This has the young Shashi Kapoor era's flavor. And a bit ofCowboy Bebop again, you know. Enjoyable, yet again.

Bhule Bisre Geet - "Ghadi Ki suiyyan tik tik karti jaye" is the comedienne of this album. It is a total 30's kind of singing with dholak and that clip-clopping wooden Rajasthani musical instrument. Very entertaining. Leaves a smile on your face.
