Yeah! I am one of those who believe that only whisky is the real gentleman's drink. I can never ever compromise and bring myself to drink the other hard drinks like vodka, gin et al. The only time of the year when I break this golden rule is when I drink two shots of rum to celebrate the first heavy shower of the rainy season, and that too for purely emotional reasons. I just cannot see the other alcoholic drinks on the same plane with this king of all alcohols - whisky! It's an unwritten law of my life. The afternoon drink is beer, but when the sun sets and the spirits soar, it's time for whisky....no less! (For over inquisitive readers- I am not a daily drinker. But whenever I have, I have whisky. Naughtyyyyy)

My normal brand is Blender's Pride. No scotch in the world can make me shift my loyalties....except....yes, you guessed it! Johnnie Walker Black Label!

The reason for this review? Just that I HAD to pay my tribute to this King of Whiskies! And what better place than our very own Mouthshut?

The very first thing that strikes you about this whisky is of course, the smoothness. It's pure bliss right from the first sip. The taste of this whisky is simply the best of all! And myself being an ethical drinker, this is just the drink for me! What is ethical drinker, you ask me? Well, allow me to explain.

Ever wondered why they call Scotch whisky the gentleman's drink? Well, the reason is simple really. It's a drink for people who know when to stop, alas, a rare species in India. Cos scotch whiskies have a unique quality, and Johnnie Walker is no exception. You do not feel that you are drunk, quite simply because the whisky is not hard. A new drinker feels he is okay and goes for the second peg. Still he is okay, so he may as well go for a third. Hell, these scotch whiskies are nothing compared to our desi brands....might as well have a fourth! Fifth follows suit! And then.....boom! The fifth peg makes our new drinker wobble. Get the point? It's four pegs without a kick, and then the fifth peg gives you the kick of all the four shots before it. That is why I said, it's for people who know when to stop. In other words, ethical drinkers.

But once you know this secret.....Johnnie Walker is a friend for life. The most common brands of Johnnie Walker are Red Label, Black Label, Blue label and as I hear from my friends Green Label. I have not yet seen Green Label, I have tried Blue Label, but cannot afford it. Out of the remaining two, I never liked Red Label. But yes! Johnnie Walker Black Label outshines not only it's other in-house productions, but also the other scotch whiskies in the market. I have tried quite a few scotch whiskies, like Chivas Regal(it's good), Teachers(it's hard), Jack Daniels(I never liked it, but loved it in martini), Black and White(it's nice) and White Horse(it's very nice). But none of these could match the standard of Black Label, either in smoothness or in taste. It is simply the best.

Anyone who looks for these two qualities in a whisky and is an ethical drinker, GO FOR IT! The others can go to the reviews on Getting over a Hangover at mouthshut.com.

Cheers!
