Why? It was banned in Noida, and I was in Delhi and frankly at the moment the only movie that is worth watching
Who? I and my important other
When? A couple of days ago.. Where? PVR citywalk premiere. This Ashutosh Gowariker movie is a good (after trying nice, fair and first, I decided good was good) attempt at a grand movie. It has a young impressionable becoming not so impressionable Akbar, and a not-at-all last century Jodhaa along with a host of comically evolving personae as the cast.
The plot meanders through a lilliputian battle to a majestic epic, morphing into a love story, turning into a court intrigue, developing into a domestic drama, resolving into a man's inner struggle with himself, while touching on the banks of women's lib, a leader's reality check, a vizier's loyalty and a brother's (in law as well) disloyalty, finally gurgling into the delta of National Integration and separation of church and state to leave you completely confused as to what it was all about!
Oh yeah, and the lines at the Hajj terminus can end, all one has to do to be sent on Pilgrimage is make a major blunder with the Emperor Akbar, and in his Jalal he gifts you a free ticket to Mecca! The Hajj committee should be mighty displeased, all their red tape comes to nought! :-)
Having said that: He is handsome. She is beautiful. The palaces are grand. The costumes are esoteric. The track is hummable. The opulence is magnificent. The plot is missing. The history is doubtful. Go watch it for the beauty
anyway.
