Rahman can be considered the pioneer for making Tamil musicuniversal. People wait eagerly for a Rahman album to hit the stores. Nowonder then that Jillunu Oru Kaadhal is selling like hot cakes. AndRahman does not disappoint his fans. Each number on the compilation isa gem by itself. Kummi adi -Seerkazhi Sivachidambaram, Naresh Iyer,Swarnalatha and Theni kunjaramma: This rustic number is great from theword go.

With Rahman using desi instruments instead of his trademark digital music, this song has the making of a great folk number. And the quartet of singers is in perfect sync. The song rises to a crescendo and takes the listener along with it on a joyride. A must hear! Maaza Maaza- Shreya Ghosal and SPB Charan: This sensuous number is romba hot machchi just because it is rendered by the honey voiced Shreya Ghoshal. SPB Charan tries to keep up with her but she leaves him far behind in the vocal race. Watch out for those small nuances in her voice.

A must for the romantic hearted, no doubt. Machakaari- VasundharaDas and Shankar Mahadevan: This song is again a foot tapping numberwith Vasundhara and Shankar combining their powerful voices to lendspirit and pep to it. The orchestration is also super, machcha.Maaricham- Carolisa, Aslam and Krishna: This song is reminiscent of thehit song Chandralekha from Thirudha Thirudha, one of Rahman's earliercompositions with the same haunting kind of voice and similar musicalarrangements. But this song has a decidedly spookier feel to itspecially the way the lady calls out 'Goutham,Goutham' in the middleand the chants towards the end. Eerie but great. Munbe va-Shreya Ghosaland Naresh Iyer: Another soft, romantic number from the maestro.

Shreya sings it like onlyshe can, filling it with sugar and spice. But the surprise package isNaresh. When this lanky singer failed to make it to the finals ofChannel V's Super Singer contest and when judge Rahman promised him asong little would he have imagined that he would become the composer'sfavourite and sing such myriad songs for him right from the collegecampus cult classic Roobaroo (Rang De Basanti) to an out and out lovesong like Munbe Va. But he has done justice to all the songs that hehas sung. This one is no exception either.

Jillunu Oru Kaadhal-Tanvi: Very different from the rest of the album, the title track seems influenced by Beetles, Elvis and the likes. It has a 70s rock-n-roll and jazz feel to it. You feel like doing the twist when you hear it. Tanvi sings it with elan. Don't miss the 'meow' sounds in between. New York Nagaram- Seems like the composer has saved the best for himself. He has toned down his voice and he hums more than sings the song. His musicians are impeccable as usual and give the maestro perfect accompaniment. And thankfully, Rahman knows which song he is suited for and unlike Himesh, does not insist on singing each and every song that he composes.

That lends an extra special touch to the song he sings. This song could be reflective of Surya's mood right now where he is missing Jo and can't wait to tie the knot in September. All in all, a great album for all music lovers.
