Something?s are just destined to be and so I guess I was destined to watch this movie almost two years after it?s release. When I did watch it finally, it was in parts, the first half at my aunt?s house on DVD almost a month ago and the other half on Star Movies yesterday. So am I actually in a position to type out a review? Well I can try. So come on lets get to it..

When the movie was under production, there was some kind of a typical bollywood tamasha about two producers making the same kind of a movie, with exactly the same story line, yes the movie that was supposed to be similar to Jhankaar Beats was Dil Vil Pyaar Vyaar. Believe me the only thing that is similar about the two movies is the ?music competition? angle and Sanjay Suri, that is it. So what is Jhankaar Beats all about? Read on and find out for yourselves..

The Story:

The story is mainly about two friends Sanjay Suri and Rahul Bose, (I cant even remember their names in the movie, I think Rahul Bose was called Rishi) who are musicians and great fans of R.D. Burman. Both of them work in an advertising agency and have been trying to win a music competition called Jhankaar Beats for the past two years. Sanjay is married to Juhi Chawla and the couple has a daughter called Muskaan.

Juhi is also in the family way again so it simply suggests that the two have been pretty busy. Rahul Bose on the other hand has not been so fortunate with his better (or bitter half) Rinke Khanna. Both of them are constantly fighting with each other and are on the verge of getting a divorce. It so happens that one night, as Sanjay and Rahul are playing in a club, a bloke called Neel (I remember his name somehow) comes up to them and wants to join their band. Rahul is in a bad mood, so he gives him the cold shoulder but eventually Sanjay gives in and Neel (Shayan Munshi) jams with them that night and he is pretty good at it too.

As luck would have it Neel is the son of Sanjay and Rahul?s Boss and is supposed to be working with them on a project of a Condom?s company. However he is too busy running behind Riya Sen to do a single ounce of productive work. All the trio needs for this campaign is a crispy one-liner, which they haven?t been able to come up with in spite of putting their heads together. Will they be able to save their jobs and impress the client, will they be able to win the elusive Jhankaar Beats trophy, will Rahul be able to mend his differences with his wife and get his marital life back on track forms the rest of the story.

Performances:

Like you must have realized by now, the story isn?t anything great, simply because the movie depicts petty real life issues that happen to every Tom, Dick and Harry. Things like why does that dammned pigeon always have to crap on my car alone, why do you have to shake hands with a person who drills his nose in public, how you wish you could just get up and slap that irritating person who always seems to flash his Colgate smile at you. These things happen to every one of us and watching them on screen is a welcome departure from watching the typical ?lost-in-love? Bollywood hero running around trees with that sweet-puppy kind of a face.

Everyone in the movie has turned in likeable performances including the side cast. Sanjay Suri as the sensitive and loyal friend warms your heart, note the scene wherein he stands in front of his mentor?s house and begs for forgiveness as he is not in a mood to play because he just lost his closest friend. Rahul Bose as the carefree fun boy lets his hair down for most part of the movie but also comes good in the few emotional scenes that he has.

The one where he is leaving his buddy and flying off to the States as he can?t cope with his troubled married life is testimony of Bose?s versatility as an actor. Debutant Shayan Munshi is earnest and Juhi Chawla is likeable. Riya Sen is also there somewhere in the mix. Look hard enough and you will find her.

The music of the film is also pretty good with some really melodious numbers tickling your ears. ?Suno Na? and ?Tu Ashiqui hai? are the ones that stand out and ?Boss kaun tha? is fun. This is another new age movie from the stables of Bollywood which needs to be applauded for it?s will to be different and refreshing at the same time. I will march along with it?s beat.
