THE JAPANESE WIFE is a good readable book by Kunal Basu which is a collection of short stories.The title is title of first short story.A Bengali village maths teacher becomes penfriend to a Japanese girl and afterwards becomes husband to her in letters.This is a strange story, and more strange is this that when the teacher dies, this woman who never came to India, now comes in widow’s attire.

There are 11 more stories who are mostly around people who are Indian connected with foreigners.The writings are very good and written in great detail.One of the interesting thing about these stories is their endings.Most of the endings are strange.

I have heard this book is also converted into a feature film some time back.It would be interesting to see these stories as films.Actors would have to work hard acting these characters as these characters are very unique such as a Russian girl who works in an Indian theatre or a foreign researcher working in Sunderbans or a foreigner lady who comes to India to immerse her husband’s ashes in India.
