In a case of alleged corporal punishment in a Bangalore school, a Class V student was beaten up by a few teachers. Following the incident, the parents withdrew the boy from Jain Heritage School, located at Kempapura.

Although the school denied the allegation, the boy’s father Madhu K, an IT professional working with a multi-national company, alleged that teachers had hit his son many times. He is now planning to seek action against the school management.

The ten-year-old boy joined the school in July. According to the parents, their son Piyush(name changed), was slapped on his cheek, after he was found talking to his friend during a movie screening.

“My son was terrified by the behavior of his teachers. The management changed their versions many times. These activities will leave a bad impression about the education system and teachers in the minds of students, ” said Madhu, who recently returned from the United States.

The parents also claimed that they had filed a complaint with the management and an apology was given. However, a week later, the child was allegedly beaten up again by the yoga teacher.

“We were not satisfied with the explanation given by the school management. They were not ready to accept the child’s version of the story. Even the yoga teacher, who initially claimed that he did not do it, later confessed that he had just tapped my son’s back, ” said the father.

The school management denied the allegations. “Our school is a child-centric one. We do not allow our teachers to indulge in such practices. They have been given special training before joining the institution. The parents of the child were interfering in various school activities. We had even conducted special counselling sessions for the child as he was not able to fit in, ” said Archana Vishwanath, principal of the school.

The management also maintained that it would not encourage corporal punishment in its schools. “We acknowledge that corporal punishment is wrong. The management would ensure that the teachers would not use it, ” said Chenraj Jain, chairman of Jain group of institutions.
