A small tribute to womankind and a classic slab of rock written by a woman who chose to walk her own path...

I'm free but I'm focused

I'm green but I'm wise

I'm hard but I'm friendly baby

I'm sad but I'm laughing

I'm brave but I'm chicken shit

I'm sick but I'm pretty baby

Trace the evolution of a woman and you will find that somewhere along the way, woman stopped playing second fiddle to man. If the first seeds of total expression were sown in the 80s, they blossomed in the 90s.

And it was in the 90s that the rebel child Alanis Morissette released her multi-million selling record Jagged Little Pill.

Before I laid my hands on a copy of Jagged Little Pill, I caught a glimpse of the video of Head Over Feet, a song from this record. The frail, long haired, Canadian lass sang with nonchalant ease and a devil-may-care attitude. The song had a unique beauty to it. I got hooked and I picked it up from the local music shop.

And all I really want is some patience

A way to calm the angry voice

And all I really want is deliverance

Do I wear you out

--------o0o---------

Alanis Morissette broke all chains and created Jagged Little Pill - a musical statement that was an anthem for women dealing with the harsh realities of the world.

Every individual line of lyric is like a thought that crossed her mind at some point of time during her formation years. Strung together, the words lash out hard, conveying a message that this lady has had enough and wont take anymore bull. She sought freedom. She wanted deliverance. And she found it in the form of music.

--------o0o---------

I don't want to be the filler if the void is solely yours

I don't want to be your glass of single malt whiskey hidden in the bottom drawer

I don't want to be a bandage if the wound is not mine

Lend me some fresh air

I don't want to be adored for what I merely represent to you

I don't want to be your babysitter you're a very big boy now

I don't want to be your mother I didn't carry you in my womb for nine months

Show me the back door

--------o0o---------

Jagged Little Pill is raw and therein lies its beauty. The music consists of crunchy guitars and percussions that provide the perfect backdrop for Alanis to embark on her vocal assault. Every now and then, she picks up her harmonica and adds a melodic passage to a song.

Alanis' vocals might not appeal to all. For those weaned on the note-perfect vocals of a Celine Dion, a Barbara Streisand or any of the other divas, Alanis will sound like an upstart. Still, listen to Jagged Little Pill and what hits you is the fact that its not pretentious - just an honest rendition that conveys a thought or a message derived from life.

--------o0o---------

We all had delusions in our head

We all had our minds made up for us

We had to believe in something

So we did

--------o0o---------

To describe each song on this record would be an unnecessary task. Each song has its own qualities and the listener is bound to have their own personal picks. My picks from the record would be Head Over Feet (heh I know... you thought it was head over heels), Ironic, Mary Jane, Not The Doctor and my favourite track... Hand In My Pocket

--------o0o---------

What it all comes down to

Is that I haven't got it all figured out just yet

I've got one hand in my pocket

And the other one is giving the peace sign

Listen to the album and accept the fact - its the age of the independent woman!
