Leonardo DiCaprio has come a long way from the fateful and immensely successful Titanic. It isn't easy to carve a niche in an industry filled with many greats. Leonardo stands not only tall but apart in this melee. His latest movie J. Edgar is another feather in his cap.
He has essayed the role of J Edgar Hoover who was the first FBI Director. He used all tricks in the books scruplous, unscruplous to retain the power his position brought him. In the process, he risked his reputation and his noble deeds too bear a hint of manipulation.
Leonardo is like our very own Amir Khan who strives for perfections. His movies in the past Inception, Aviator, Shutter Island too are in the same mould.
There are four major characters in the film that stand out. First up Judi Dench as Edgar’s mother. Her love, affection and more importantly obsession with her son are subtly portrayed .
Next comes Edgar’s first love interest and close confidant Naomi Watts as Helen Gandy was very good. Armie Hammer as Clyde Tolson, who is supposed to be Edgar’s homosexual partner. he was more appealing as a young man. His older version looked very fake.
Like any Clint Eastwood film, this too has moments, when just as you think, the movie has ended, up comes another twist. You have to loads of patience to watch the movie as the drama unfolds on the screen.
The film focuses more on Edgar’s sexuality rather than his controversial career. So if you are in for an American political drama you’ll be seriously disappointed.
J. Edgar is for those who have read about Edgar’s controversial life out of interest. So if you empathize with him even remotely, then it’s a movie you will enjoy.
