Recently an actor approached Supreme Court to stop electronic media from telecasting her photographs taken secretly in bathroom, while in jail. With the advent of gizmos, electronic media is stooping to any extent to gain popularity or TRP rating as it is called. Long ago, before TV channels made appearance, there goes a story. A man used to tie a pebble to a string and hurl it around. His logic was he was exercising his Right to Freedom of Expression. One day one of his victims approached him and said I fully appreciate your gesture of using Right to Freedom of Expression, but your freedom ends where my territory starts and you have no right to trespass upon my territory.
The electronics media is going bersek with usage of Right to Freedom of Expression, but is it acting with sense of responsibility. Vishal Inamdar has tried to bring forth these issues of sting operations in his forthcoming movie IT’S BREAKING NEWS.
Vidya is news correspondent with news channel Dateline. She covers entertainment programmes. She is young, dynamic professional who does her job well and is happy about what she does. She feels out of place when shifted to crime beat. Yet as there is no alternative she conditions herself to this new area and begins performing well here too. In the course of time, Vidya picks up the nitty grit ties of her new beat and also enjoys the thrill of challenges involved.
Once, Vidya fetches a story from a M.P for her channel. This raises the TRP of channel and also instills confidence in her. She is now willing to go to any extent to procure exciting news for Dateline. At time she creates situations to get story even by overlooking ethics and code of conduct in journalism. She is on the prowl to get a real breaking news, which comes to her in form of phone from Sangeeta. Sangeeta is a victim of sexual abuse.
Vidya sets out to design a sting operation. She intends to cover act live when S.P is assaulting Sangeeta. Vidya along with her colleague Rafiq films the rape. But instead of S.P it is DIG who gets filmed in the act. Both Vidya and Rafiq are perturbed by their own deed of filming and besides helpless to save Sangeeta, feels guilty and ashamed of having shot inhuman criminal act in their quest for Breaking News…..
Vidya’s seniors do not see anything unethical in it. They are towards celebration as their news is going to give them boost in market. She is aghast to see the telecast. She had promised Sangeeta that footage will not be telecasted but used as her defense in court. However the channel management does not want the golden opportunity to go off and has not heed to Vidya’s request to stop telecast.
Vidya is disgusted with the profession and goes to her Uncle’s place rater reluctantly. Her uncle has his own press. He fires her conscience to true power and abuse of Journalism. He further inspires her to fight the system.
Bala is a close friend of Vidya. He thinks Vidya is a superficial person with no deep insights into the things. However when he sees Vidya fighting for Sangeeta, Bala changes his thoughts and promises Vidya to help her fight with the system.
How the battle against system does go on? Do Vidya and her friends succeed in their mission? Does Sangeeta get justice? Do the channels feel remorse for their acts? IT’S BREAKING NEWS, a story of truth, justice and survival.The movie stars Koel Purie, Vinay Apte, Swati Sen, Atul Parchure, Virendra Saxena, and Nandita Puri. Lyric is by Saahil and music is by Kaushal Inamdar.
The movie is coming at a time just as government is serious with idea of setting Broadcasting Regulatory Authority of India (BRAI), under ministry of Information and Broadcasting. After all news channels are not pornographic or adult channels. They should limit the misuse of freedom of expression given to them with sense of responsibility.
The sting operations these days are nothing but an act of vengeance, in most cases.
