The Island City- the name speaks for itself. Mumbai is a city where victims of daily monotonous and fast paced life are not very uncommon. This movie revolves around the three people who are trapped in their lives facing different issues and wish to break free from them.The plot is very interesting as it covers the authoritarianism faced by the three protagonists, their rebellions against it and the consequences they face. The protagonist of the first story is played by the insanely talented Vinay Pathak.He plays the role of a corporate robot working in a company called systematic solutions and does not seem to have a life beyond work.He lives a routine life planned precisely, right down to the 6 a.m. alarm, the glass of water and five almonds soaked overnight. All of which is strategically placed by his bedside.In an unexpected turn of events, Suyash wins the office ‘Fun Committee Award’ and is thereby forced to have fun for an entire day.His non-reluctance to go ahead is such that his boss instructs him angrily " You better have fun". The second story revolves around the rebel of a family against the tyrannical patriarch.The patriarch gets hospitalized and finds himself on life support.The family finds the much-needed freedom and celebrate their freedom By buying themselves a television set.The subtly expressive Amruta Subhash as the wife, Sarita, and the quirky friendly mother, Uttara Baokar, are a delight together. The third is about a girl who has already been engaged but finds herself in a confusing spot when she starts receiving anonymous letters. She continues communication with the anonymous sender who is empathetic towards her.They eventually grow closer to each and she finds herself in a situation where she is forced to make a choice.What does she choose?
The three stories are loosely interconnected and the unconventional manner in which the movie depicts longing and freedom are what make it an interesting watch.
