A Convenient Dream.

Nagesh Kukoonor brings his next, ‘Iqbal’. The movie is produced by Mukta Searchlight Pictures. The movie tells the story of a boy in a village that has just one and only one dream – he wants to become a cricketer. Not to forget, he is deaf and dumb.

I watched it yesterday, and liked the movie. But in retrospect, I think the movie has a lot of blotches. At the end, the movie comes to me as a convenient dream.

Let’s see. Iqbal, son of a farmer and his wife, and brother to a school going sister – is deaf and dumb. His talents are his patience and of course, his deadly aim with the cricket ball. Notice I don’t write that he can bowl, because the director makes it clear to us in the first half, that he cannot bowl, but he can aim well with the leather.

Conveniently, (I will be using this word a lot in this review), a cricket school is opened right where he goes to graze his cows. Conveniently, his sister – the girl child of a village house drowned in loans and mortgages – who still goes to the school learns the deaf and dumb language in a village that is far away from you. Conveniently, he gets into the school and has a tiff with an Indian Idol look-alike (Who was he?) and gets chucked out of the school. Well, so we have a rich against the poor hangover, so what?!! Life has always been of the has-nots and haves, isn’t it?

Well, the level of convenience doesn’t end here, you see, this village has a drunkard, who was – conveniently – in the Indian cricket team, and would you believe it, he was a bowler. Well, the convenient drunkard has a convenient financial background to gift him expensive sports shoes, which he gives to the convenient mother. The convenient sister looks on.

So, the convenient father finds out about this, and flies into a rage convenient enough to have him throw the shoes into a convenient kitchen fire.

The convenient sister takes the shoes and finds that conveniently, only the color of the shoes have faded and are usable after being thrown in a village kitchen fire - yippy yay for convenient shoes.

The convenient drunkard finds that the Ranji selection team is being selected you guessed it, at a convenient date, before which he can hone the skills of this aimer-at-the-wickets – conveniently.

Though the convenient mother takes up a convenient ruse to go to a convenient place where the selection committee is going on, they face some inconvenience. However, that is changed when they find a convenient selector, who was a fan of the convenient drunkard coach.

Well, the movie goes on conveniently, with the height of convenience being the fifty lakhs that a RANJI TROPHY PLAYER gets as a ad fees, which again puts his father in a convenient place.

Convenient.
