While going thorugh the mall, I came across the Intex iRist Watchphone being displayed. It was priced at Rs. 8999. It initially appears like any other tacky smartwatch with its bright orange wrist straps that can blind you like a hot summer’s day. The category of smartwatches is a love it or hate it type of affair. However, the Intex iRist stands out as it is actually a phone disguised as a smartwatch. There is no reason for such a thing to exist other than to cater to the lunatic consumers who love to get their hands on crazy gadgets.

It comes with a tiny 1.56 inch OLED display with 240p resolution and two buttons on the side. In between the two buttons is a bulge where a mini 5 Mpx camera is located. It can be used to click photos and record videos over the 4GB internal memory present. The storage can be expanded to 32GB via microSD. It comes featured with Android KitKat which is not optimized for the slide-to-the-right operability. The iRist comes with all the major wireless features like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and even 3G support. Calls can be placed using the funky-looking orange earphones and works just like a regular handsfree. However a major drawback is that the earphones have to be charged separately which is time consuming and unnecessary.

It comes with its version of Play Store stocked with a wide range of apps and games. Whatsapp was a pain to use as the text required a level of dexterity(including fingernails) to perform. As a smartwatch, it comes with a step counter only with no orientation sensor present.

The camera can only be used by people who wear watches on their left hand. Those who wear the watch on their right hand to take photos will end up taking only an “arm-fie”.

Intex needs to improve their design and fix all these shortcomings. As of now, it is not recommended for purchase and will only be sought-after by any gadget loving freak. Kindly rate my review and leave your comments. Cheers!
