IEM or Institute of Engineering and Management is one of the oldest and top privated colleges of Kolkata. Basically admission to IEM is done through IIT-JEE and WBJEE. The cut- off rank for students wanting to secure a seat in IEM is upto 2000 in WBJEE and for students appearing in JEE exam, one needs to qualify Jee-Mains in order to get admitted. However, the cut-off may vary every year. I completed my B.Tech from year in the year and 2014 and am currently employed with WIPRO, Delhi since two years.

Every aspect of IEM is worth praising and is detailed as follows -

1.) Campus life - Campus life of IEM is awesome. With a wide campus that encloses various basic amenities inside the campus, it makes a students life easy. Me and my friends used to hangout till late night in our hostel roofs. One of the best places for friends hangout is the college canteen and Randhari Chacha’s tea. Nothing could beat this combination. The best thing about IEM is that no one is forced whatsoever to do anything. Students can attend classes or they cannot. Action is only taken when matters gets a little serious. Our favourite timepass was the ground where we used to hit the cricket during Sundays.

2.) Fee structure - Admission to IEM for B.Tech four year course has an expenditure of Rs 42, 000 per semester(excluding hostel and mess facility), and the fees gradually increases every year.

3.) Hostel facility - Limited boarding & lodging are available separately for both boys & girls. The hostels are split separately for boys and girls and the students are placed according to their respective years in B.Tech. However the availability of rooms are limited and the students who fail to acquire a room in the college hostel are accommodated in the hostels outside the college campus. Within the college campus, the fees of the hostels are Rs 5000 – Rs 7500 per month which includes fooding facility, AC and Non-AC rooms, etc. This fees is included in the fees structure of the college. Outside the campus, hostels are a little cheaper ranging from Rs 3500 – Rs 7000. The hostels are split into rooms that are shared by three students and a barely minimum space available. However there is an additional option for separate bathrooms which requires a higher fee. For students opting for PGs, the price is around Rs 3500 to Rs 8000 per month depending on the facilities provided

4.) Mess facility - Food is available as purely veg for vegetarians and purely no-veg for non-vegetarians. Mess food however is equally odd in every place. There has always been a bad reputation for mess food in practically every college of India unlike some very sophisticated college. My college IEM isn’t an exception either. The first year I spent in the college hostel, food was simply worth gulping. In the second year, I shifted to a hostel outside the college campus and the food was slightly better there compared to its previous one. In the third year, me and a few friends shifted to a PG and food were made by us only so we didn’t have to complain about mess food. However food is strictly of bad taste in the mess here and even though the items do have a certain portion of Non-Veg stuff, the availability of chicken or egg or fish failed to charm the students, or me precisely.

5.) Faculty - The faculty of IEM is among the best in West Bengal. The professors are highly qualified and equally friendly in their behaviour. Minimum qualification of a professor is a Masters degree and most of them are Doctorates in their respective field.

6.) Placements - IEM holds a strong position among other private colleges in terms of placement. According to a recent study, it has provided 100% placement to its students for the past seven years. n our batch, everyone got placed within 5 days. 80% of the batch had multiple offers. I personally had 3 offers. I am presently working with ITC Infotech since 1 year and my salary is around Rs 30000. The college has four placement officers under the chairmanship of the Institute's director who work as placement cell.  Many reknown companies hoist their cells to recruit students from IEM. Some of the very famous companies that are known to regularly recruit IEM graduates are:

•Tata Consultancy Services

•Cognizant Technology Solutions

•Wipro Technologies

•Price Waterhouse Coopers

•Siemens

•Microsoft

•Sasken

•Infosys

•Capgemini

The companies along with their average packages and students recruitment are as follows:

1.Microsoft(offers as high as 15 lakhs packages) – Recruits 5-6 students approx.

2.INFOSYS(offers 2-4 lakhs) – Recruits 100-150 students approx.

3.WIPRO(offers 2-4 lakhs) – Recruits 50-100 students approx.

4.Capgemini(offers 5-6 lakhs) – Recruits 10 students approx.

5.TATA consultancy services(offers 6-7 lakhs) – Recruits 10-15 students approx.

Amongst other companies are IBM, ACC, NESTLE, VODAFONE, IDEA, KOTAK, TECH MAHINDRA, RELIANCE, SATYAM, LNT, HSBC, INDIAN ARMY, ASIAN PAINTS, ICICI, HP, ACCENTURE, BHARTI AIRTEL, ERRICSON, FINTECH, LEXMARK International, KLONEMARK, TEOCO, ADP, etc. Almost 60-70 percent of the students are recruitrecruited by INFOSYS, INFOTECH, COGNIZANT and WIPRO every year regularly.

7.) College events -  IEM hosts a number of Technical, Culltural and Management fest throughout the year. These festivals are for the entertainment and knowledge purpose of students. A lot of colleges participate in these fests and some very reknowned personalities also attend to perform in such fests.

INNOVACION - Innovacion is the annual technological fest of Institute of Engineering and Management, organized in association with University of Engineering and Management. It celebrates technical prowess and out of the box thinking. It helps participants to think, ideate, innovate and push themselves to go that extra mile. It is a medium through which the youth can express their views, their creativity, their talent and their technological skills.

The fest has a plethora of technical and non-technical events ranging from Robotics, Coding, Electronics, Management, Core Science and Mathematics, Gaming and a number of other fun and adrenaline-gushing events. Apart from these events, many workshops and trainings are carried out that aid students bring the them face to face with the leading and emerging technologies of the world, which is set to be a very enlightening experience for the budding creative minds.

IEMCON is another such grand fest which witnesses huge participation.

IEMCON is organized in the Science City Auditorium. Stream toppers are felicitated on that day. Awards are also given to students for their all-round performance. IEMCON also witnesses speeches from eminent professors across the nation.

8.) Extra Curricular - IEM holds a number of short term courses, seminars and workshops to enhance the participation of students into various extra curricular activities that boosts knowledge. Various seminars like International Conference on “Innovative Techno management solutions”, National Seminar on Technology Invasion in Social Lifestyle, Toy Technology, Could Computing, Strategic HR audit are directed towards the enlightment of students knowledge in various fields like Computing, Business, Enterpreneurship, etc.

Another best thing about college life is the parties and hangouts we get to attend. From “Freshers Party” in the first year to individual hostel parties, everything holds a special memory in the students heart. The freshers party is generally organised by seniors to welcome juniors. IEM holds competitions among departments on who conducts the best freshers party. Hostel parties are a part of the ongoing process. Every students birthday in our batch constituted into an elaborate party which later turned out to be an event where the Warden would come running to chase us into our rooms. These experiences would stay by forever.

Final Verdict - I believe every students college is the best in his/her opinion. And the time they spent there is the best moment of their life. My four years in IEM(2010-2014) were the best phase of my life. IEM was and is like my next home. I made a lot of friends and a few enemies, not to forget that. However the experiences I had been through here will always be cherished. There is nothing bad I have to say about IEM. It’s the best college in my opinion and I recommend it to every student aspiring for WBJEE. All I have to say about IEM is that when you arrive here, you won’t be disappointed.
