It’s a normal working day in Manhattan when Dalton Russell (Clive Owen) and his contemporaries, Steve(Carlos Andres Gomez), Stevie(Kim Director) and Steve-O(James Ransone) decide to rob a bank by holding a group of around 50 people hostage. Detective Keith Frazier(Denzel Washington) and his accomplice Detective Bill Mitchell(Chiwetel Ejiofor) are assigned to become negotiators. But the strange part is, Dalton and his team are Not Looting the bank. They don’t come up with any demand. All they do is make sure everyone in the bank are wearing the same clothes (A big one piece workshop coat) and have covered themselves in a white mask making sure only the eyes are visible. Meanwhile The Bank Chairman, Arthur Case(Christopher Plummer) assigns a power brocker, Madeline White(Jodie Foster) do some of his own personal negotiations with the robbers. Slowly and steadily, Dalton tries to assemble the truth as what you see, is not necessarily what you get. Brilliant Direction by Spike Lee and superb performances by everyone. The song “Chaiyya Chaiyya” played during the start credits and the end credits is suited perfect for the movie. A must watch for all movie buffs. Reminds one of such movies like Dog Day Afternoon(even a reference is made to that movie), Mad City, Hostage and The Negotiator.
