Unlike other National physical education Institutes who have large campuses this is located in a small Govt. School building in Vikas Puri, right in the center of Delhi, accessible by Bus and hopefully by Metro soon.

This institute was the brain child of Dr.Narukka of Delhi University who really worked hard to get all the clearances and certifications. Our first few months were spent at Chattrasal stadium, Model Town while he and Dr.Kiran Walia found some space for us at Ludlow Castle Govt. School near ISBT to attend theory classes.

He also made sure we got the best Anatomy and Physiology lessons at M.A.M.C, Delhi Gate for an hour or two a week.Initially theinstituteoffered a B.Sc in Sport Sciences.Later a one year D.Ped.was added since we had many problems getting jobs and admission into Post Graduate studies.Other states would notrecognize ourB.Sc program, I am not too sure of the whys but what I could understand was that UGC had something to do with it.

What that means is in order to get a teaching job you need a one year D.Ped. program after B.Sc. I would encourage someone trying to get into this area to thoroughly research what he or she is getting into.Basically, after these four years, you could work as a school teacher or get certified to work at a Gym.You would also need a certificate in Coaching from Sports Authority of India to work as a Coach in a specific sport anywhere.

A Masters Degree in Phy.Edu. and sports achievements help in the admission process for coaches.Another allied area is Sports medicine where a Medical Degree or a Physiotherapy Degree is needed.Coming back to IGI, A Masters Program is offered which may get you a job as a lecturer or one of fewadministrativejobs with the Govt.

Overall a student goes through academics which teach how children develop, how science effects sports performance, how to teach and manage P.E classes and basics of nutrition, anatomy, psychology and allied areas. It helps to get admission if you have excelled at one or two sports at School and State level because there is so much competition now.P.E teachers are no longer known as P.T.instructors, they are expected to follow a curriculum and maintain daily lesson plans.

Teachers here try to maintain discipline with stress on attendance. They also make sure that the subject matter is explained in Hindi .There is opportunity to learn for someone who really wants to excel in this area. The college has grown slowly from the fields of Chattrasal Stadium to its present location in a Govt.

School, Vikaspuri.Facilities are archaic by todays standard.I believe focus is more on supply side for physical education teachers than Research.Unlike other colleges where it is in-campus dorm life, here students are free to live off campus. This college has a potential to groom quality P.E professionals but its moving too slow.
