This is a wonderful museum and houses a lot of artifacts for the olden era. Its a must visit place for everyone visiting Kolkata. It will be a wonderful experience for everyone who visits this museum , especially for children . History might bore you if you read a text book but it will be a completely different experience when you visit such a museum and get to see these historical artifacts in front of you.
I used to visit this museum regularly during my childhood days. Even now I love visiting this place with my family. This place is used by art students and archeology students a lot. We can see a lot of such students doing there research here. We can see them sit in front of sculptures and trying to draw or recreate them to learn and showcase their talents. Foreign travellers who visit Kolkata come in large groups to this museum to learn more about the culture, tradition and history of India. I am sure it would have been a mesmerizing experience for them as well.
There are a lot of things in this which will amaze visitors but I would like to highlight a few major attractions of this museum.
The museum hosts huge skeletons of Mammoths and dinosaurs here. It will really amaze us to know that elephants as huge as these skeletons did exist in this Earth.
This museum has many stuffed real sized animals . This will give you a feel that you are walking in a zoo and you are watching these animals in the wild. They have stuffed these endangered or extinct animals with a lot of precision and expertise.
It has an air conditioned room only to preserve two Mummies from Egypt. These are one of the few mummies which have been bought to India. For a person who has never seen a mummy before this will be a very special experience.
This museum has a huge floor filled with statues of people from different parts of India. This depicts the people, the tradition and age old culture of different people from different states of our country. You can get a glimpse of entire India under one roof. Many among these are tribal figurines of India as well which we Indians themselves might have never seen before.
This museum holds many varieties of artifacts from the olden golden era of India. Such as the remains of the Harappan and Mohenjodaro civilization, the ornaments used by the Chola dynasty, the stupas of Ashoka, the Mughal carpets and amazing jewellery and dresses are among the various collection present here.
This museum has a huge biology lab with many amazing treats for us. It has preserved rare feotus such as a two headed cow, conjoined twins , etc.
We must have atleast half a day to walk , cover and explore everything that is present in this museum. I really love this place and I think everyone should come and visit this place to learn more about our ancestors.
