As director of the Earth Space Defense program, MIT graduate-turned-cable technician-turned world-saving computer hacker, David Levinson ( Jeff Goldblum) , utilized crashed alien ships and systems to develop new weapons, detection systems, and defensive measures for protecting Earth from outside threats.
