This movie was directed by Adrian Lyne, the same man who made Fatal attraction and 9 1/2 weeks, both popular worldwide for their steamy visuals and loathed for their theme. This time too the director received more brickbats than bouquets for sensationalising a single line story but the truth is, he has tried to go deep into the minds of the 2 lead characters, whereas the 3rd character is shown only as a packaged product and nobody gets to see the real thing inside.
Well the theme money cannot buy happiness or love, is shown solidly and U have to appreciate the Director for telling that in his own visually pleasing way. Demi Moore and Woody Harrelson are both young and married and live a typical middle class life. Demi is a real estate agent and Woody is an Architect who has a dream to build thier cosy love nest near a river and spends most of his time doing the sketches for that. But a recession leaves Woody without a job and their dream house stands threatened.
They decide to take some risk. They borrow $5000 and head upto Las vegas to try their luck at the casinos but they fail miserably, and this is where they get to meet the billionaire businessman Robert Redford. He asks for Demi's help in trying his luck and he ends up winning a million dollars. The lady's luck surprises him and he in turn surprises the young couple by popping up the unusual proposal ''Would U like to spend a night with me for a million dollars!?!?''
The whole night they think about it and decide to opt for the uncomfortable option. They realise their stupidity only after evrythin is over..but it's too late. Woody starts to distrust Demi and soon the two love birds are separated and now comes our billionaire again into the scene. He tries to woo Demi and almost succeeds. The divorce papers are the only formality left, and Woody is offered the million if he accepts to sign.
He accepts and donates the money to a Hippo in a zoo and leaves but......thats not the end. ''If you love something, set it free. If it comes back then it was meant to be. If it doesn't, then it wasn't meant to be in the first place.'' Hope u got the clue to the real ending. The movie was sweet and had some memorable moments like the cosy moments the young couple shared in thier happier times and also the sentimental meeting at the very place Woody proposed to her. On the whole the movie is worth watching and it will definitely entertain U and also definitely raise some uncomfortable questions.. ''what will you do if u were in such a situation?'' well lucky folks like me who aren't married yet needn't bother much...
