Movie Review : Inception - Go, live the dream !!

Man has travelled across time, to the moon, through the arteries of another man, to the depths of the sea, to the center of the earth and now he travels through others dreams. No, that idea is not original, but the idea of implanting an idea into someone else’s mind, is a relatively new one.

But that’s not what’s great about this movie. The story is not mind boggling enough to keep you confused. Its relatively straight forward, other than the fancy names the elements are given e.g. Tottum! Anyways, what’s special about the movie is the trademark Nolan style. The movie has Nolan written all over it. It’s got the same tension building screenplay, feel enhancing background score that the Dark Knight had and hence, the effect is similar. You dig deep into your seat and enjoy the ride till it lasts. Though emotionally, this movie does not have the same impact as its worthy predecessor.

So we have our protagonist Dom Cobb(Leonardo DiCaprio) who is essentially an IDEA thief, who is given a job by Saito(Ken Watanabe) to implant an idea into the mind of Robert Fisher Jr.(Cillian Murphy) who is the heir to a business empire. To steal an idea is relatively easy, but to implant one is a mighty difficult task. Added to this Dom’s dark past, which haunts him in his dreams. So, Dom creates his team to accomplish the task and they venture into Fisher’s dream. But there is one catch they have not taken into consideration and the journey turns into a nail biting action adventure!

Ok, I won’t lie, this movie does give a group of friends a lot of opportunities to come up with PJ’s. Like the dream within a dream within a dream is too much of a loop to handle. We for one were reminded of “Dream main Dream –Parag Dream!”(Remember Parag Saree?:P) Infact the movie goes into Parag^2 Dream:P There are many such elements of Dream travel that are super funny. I am sure, loads of parodies are bound to crop up on this one idea! But what goes beyond the comedy, is the logic. And the movie does not defy logic.

Once again it’s Nolan who is the hero of the film. Nolan has been building this story for a long time, and fresh after the super success of the Batman films, he seems in complete control of his art. The performances of the lead, though competent, do not matter. And even if they did, with a cast like DiCaprio, Micheal Caine, Ellen Page, Cillian Murphy, Ken Watanabe – you can hardly go wrong. The actors are just elements used to convey the story. Its Nolan’s screenplay and direction that keep you nailed to your seats. The editing is slick and the background score riveting.

Technically speaking the movie is spectacular, with cities getting built in front of your eyes(like the movie “Dark City”), zero gravity action sequences, super slow-mo sequences. The detailing in the CG shots is amazing to say the least. Even though the movie is edited super slick, I did find a few jumps in there. Maybe the movie was getting too long for comfort, at a running length of 148 minutes. But then as a viewer I have no complaints as I was entertained.

Final Say – you should definitely go and watch this film. The idea itself is awesome and the Nolan effect is spellbinding. Plus, it leaves a lasting impression in your mind, because you keep thinking of what would happen next/ or what happened, even after the movie is over. Go, live the dream…
