I am an alumni of IIT Guwahati .I had an experience of attending counselling session in IIT bombay ,the Summer of 2002. I would like to help for the counselling MIND BOGGLING questions that arise in the minds of every new entrant to JEE ..
Q1: Is the IIT Secure?.... Yes..IIT Guwahati started in 1995 and till now 6 batches have been successfully passed out and well placed in industries or in famous US Universities for their Higher Studies or in the highly prestigious IIMs.There is No Sensitive Regionfrom IIT Guwahati,in its vicinity upto 300-350 KMs. .The only currently sensitive region is Bodoland and it is also cooling down as now there are a lot of development work going on in this region too from the Government side.
Q2: What is there in IIT Guwahati and what is not So IIT Guwahati presently consists of.... 4 Boys Hostels ,one Girls Hostel [ all upto international standards and single seaters..:-) ] ,one Really Big Guest House with a big Conference Hall and very fine 'executive class' rooms.Swimming Pool etc. are currently being constructed Student Activity Center(SAC).A no. of faculty and staff Quarters to accommodate all faculty and staffs..(I should say Bungalows..they are really beautiful),4 lakes, Fully functional Administrative Block(Really fine Architecture having a really fine Central Canteen),Academic Block(All classes,Laboratories,Workshops are well established in this biggest Area of Construction at IIT-G),besides this Galleries and Halls are there for Larger Gathering(All Centrally Air-Conditioned).Computer science People have an added benefit as their Lab is going to be one of the best in India as there is going to be very lucrative Personal Space system from 2nd year onwards in their Lab.

and after all The studies here are really burning ones and you will have to study very hard .....more than you worked for your JEE and so come with a premonition of the work load .....its nowhere less or easier than IIT-K or IIT-B...
Finally judge any Institute only after browsing the Faculty Pages and do compare the Faculty as after all Its the Teachers who are going to make you a man not the old reputation of the Institute
