THE CITY:Guwahati, with a population of 10 lakh, is the largest city in the north eastern region . It is also the capital of the state of Assam. The city abounds in scenic beauty with hills located towards the East and South with the mighty Brahmaputra flowing along the North. Guwahati experiences a cool and pleasant winter and a warm and humid summer. The city comprises of simple and hospitable people belonging to different linguistic groups and religious faiths.
Being the gateway to the north-eastern region of the country, Guwahati is well connected by air and rail. Direct trains run to a number of cities and major towns in the country. Guwahati is also directly connected by air to Delhi and Calcutta and there are connecting flights to various cities of India.
THE INSTITUTE:
Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati the sixth member of the IIT fraternity, was established in 1994. The academic programme of IIT Guwahati commenced in 1995.At present the Institute has nine departments covering all the major engineering and science disciplines, offering B. Tech., B. Des., M. Tech., Ph.D. and M.Sc. programmes. A department of Biotechnology and a department of Chemical Engineering are being established with student intake from July 2002. Within a short period of time, IIT Guwahati has been able to build up the necessary infrastructure for carrying out advanced research and has been equipped with state-of-the-art scientific and engineering instruments.
IIT Guwahati's campus is on a sprawling 285 hectares plot of land on the north bank of the river Brahmaputra around 20 kms. from the heart of the city. With the majestic Brahmaputra on one side, and with hills and vast open spaces on others, the campus provides an ideal setting for learning. While the campus construction programme will terminate at the end of the tenth five year plan, students' hostels, faculty and staff quarters, and a guest house have already been built.
FACILITIES:
Computer facilities
All faculty and staff members of the institute are provided with a PC. All these computers are hooked on to the campus network. Most of the office work is automated with a view to improve efficency and reduce the use of papers. Internet and e-mail facility are provided through two leased lines. Both these facilities are provided to the faculty members, officers and students.
Each department has a sufficient number of PCs in the laboratories for the students. They can connect to their departmental server or to the computer centre servers.
Boarding facilities
All the students of the Institute have been lodged in hostels in the campus. They have been accommodated in single-seater rooms. These hostels are equipped with modern amenities and facilities for sports and recreation such as satellite TV, indoor games and a gymnasium. Facilities for outdoor games like volleyball, basketball and football are also there. Computer facilities are also available in each of the hostels. Separate accommodation is provided to the girl students. A round-the-clock canteen is in operation to cater to the needs of the students.
Both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food are available in the hostels. Each hostel has a Warden to look after the welfare of the students. The overall administration of the hostels is looked after by the Hostel Management Committee.
The IIT Guest House provides accommodation to Institute guests, visiting faculty and guardians of students
Sports & Recreation
The Institute has a Gymkhana to oversee the cultural and sports activities. The Gymkhana has a student General Secretary, a Sports Secretary, Academic Secretary, a Cultural Secretary - all of whom belong to the student community and are elected by the students.
The Gymkhana arranges cultural activities for the benefit of the students. A cultural festival called “Alcheringa” and “Techniche”, the technical festival of IIT Guwahati is organized every year. A sub-chapter of SPIC-MACAY Guwahati has also been started.
The Gymkhana has a good collection of musical equipment for the use of its students. It also arranges different sports activities. Indoor sports facilities are available in the hostels. Outdoor games are also arranged.
Health Care
Medical facilities are provided to the staff and students of the Institute through an OPD set up in one of the hostels. The Institute currently has three medical officers, all of whom are specialists. Patients requiring indoor treatment are referred to the Guwahati Medical College Hospital(GMCH) where modern facilities for treatment are available. Apart from GMCH, the institute has several approved private nursing homes including the Guwahati Neurological Research Centre (GNRC). The Institute also has a few approved diagnostic laboratories where patients can undergo routine and special investigations as and when required.
Training & Placement
The Placement Cell was established in order to assist the students of the Institute in getting suitable employment. The placement activities were initiated in the middle of 1998 with a view to helping our students obtain gainful employment. A large number of companies/ organizations from both the public and private sector, including IT multinational firms, conducted campus interviews. The placement percentage of the Institute from the very inception has been higher than ninety percent with many of our past students being placed in reputed national and multi-national organizations.
