The first lesson in my first class at IIPM (back in 1996) taught me how good managers are time misers and don’t waste a speck of it. That’s exactly why I first thought not to fritter away my energy in writing about my institute. For it needs no appraisal or a review to be acknowledged the best, which it so distinctly is!

Another lesson at IIPM taught me how passionate people do not tolerate any act of claptrap on them, however inconsequential. And that’s how when I stumbled on this site and read a ‘review’ by some who does not understand my institute.. I thought it was worth a shot to write this one, for some of you who read this, meet veracity.

I surely am an aficionado for my institute and the teachers who taught me. And who else could (and should) talk about anything that one has experienced herself/himself.

Studying at IIPM was a tremendous learning experience for me and everybody who wanted to make a difference. It being an institute driven by strong philosophies, effective teachers and hands-on course curriculum, most of us made it, and made it faster than ordinary.

Every institute, college and university has its own strengths.. yet there are certain facts worth mentioning about IIPM, which other B schools find hard to match.

  • At that time of my passed out, IIPM had about 60 permanent faculty members; the figure now is more than 200. (No other institute in India including IIMs can boast of it; mind you permanent faculties only, leave apart a pool of visiting teachers)

  • It is the only institute in the world that started its own management consulting firm (started by its own ex students, called Planman Consulting, which is rated among highly successful and profit making consultancy firms). And it is the most logical result of good teaching.. that is if you can teach your students how to be successful entrepreneurs.. why can’t you be one yourself. So why is it that no other institute ever dared to start its own corporation? Reasons are obvious, firstly, you don’t trust your own teaching, secondly you are afraid that your ideas may not be appreciated in the corporate world! So IIPM is the only institute that ‘Walks The Talk’!! Also note that there are business corporations setting up management schools but not a single academic like IIPM who started a company. IIPM was set up by a teacher in 1973, Dr. M K Chaudhuri, then a professor at IIM B.

  • IIPM is the biggest non-govt sponsored management institute in terms of infrastructure, having 4 facilities with more than 10 acres area in Delhi alone. Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Chennai being other facilities.

  • It happens only at IIPM .. hundreds of its own students (count 300-350) join back the institute, to take further its cause (remember, I told you it’s a philosophy driven institute!!) foregoing a corporate career! Why do they do that? What else.. love for the institute!! This phenomenon is a case study of its kind anywhere in the world!! Proof enough to say no other institute can claim this high a loyalty. Not a single IIM graduate has ever joined back!!

  • It has the only course curriculum (in the world) to incorporate the entire syllabus of economics honors.. making it most rational.

  • It has indigenously developed subjects, viz., ‘Beyond Principles of Management and Economics’.. ‘What They Don’t each You At IIMs’.. where, in short, we’re not just taught how to be effective managers but to be good human beings too!

  • Not to forget our very own, most loved Dean Professor Arindam Chaudhuri. Needless to say he is the biggest success story in the history of Indian management consulting. Awarded as ‘personality of the decade’, ‘best management guru’, ‘one of top 50 leading thinkers in Asia’ by European commission.. need I say more!! When other management experts just talk about motivation and aren’t necessarily successful in their own business.. When Prof. Arindam talks about motivation, he first proves his model by keeping his own people motivated! Is there any teacher anywhere in the world who has hundreds of his own students working for him? None! As I happen to be his student, I know most of them and they swear by him to stay with him till eternity! (I plan to do the same) He is a not just a good orator but an inherent motivator. Also notable is the fact that they are all working for a career not just blind fan following or charity. So a business model has been established that is doing well too! We have seen hundreds of top corporate honchos taking management lessons from him. He is also a successful author. Read (to believe) a copy of ‘The Great Indian Dream’ authored by Mr. Arindam and Mr. M K Chaudhuri. And he teaches at IIPM!!

Dare to think beyond the IIMs… a philosophy of the institute nurtured by Dr, M K Chaudhuri.. who himself was a teacher at IIM B. In one of his classes he explained how as a teacher at IIM his ideas to improve the curriculum never found recognition, so he started his own institute in frustration. And today IIPM stand taller than IIM in so many ways as explained in all the points above. He didn’t even send his son Arindam to IIM or any other B School.. yes Arindam Chaudhuri is a pure 100% product of IIPM., further reflecting his faith in his own teaching and philosophy.

One shall not deny the packages that IIM grads fetch.. but the average age of passing out from IIMs is 26 and from IIPM is 22!.

I shall explain many other facets of IIPM when I log in next time.. till then I shall sum up by saying that my IIPM means a lot to me.. and to hundreds of us who passed out from here.

When our batch mates meet, we maintain the same levels of energy enthused in us at IIPM, cherish every moment we spent at our shrine of worship!!

Cheers.. Aruna!!
