Last week a widely read English daily in Delhi carried out front page lead story on the fee hike at IIM’s. With a short stint in journalism backing my intellect and sense of news, I felt sorry for the lowering standards of journalism today…but hey wait, silly me, there is a catch…the story was not a reflection of hw gradually news sense is fading out but instead wat came out very clearly was that these B-schools are gaining new heights and how!!. That even a fee hike at these temples of management studies bask in front page glory of Indian media.
B-school honchos are crossing new milestones with each passing day. So it was not very surprising when an unprecedented pay package (at least in Indian context) of 80 lacs PA went out to an IIM pupil.
The media went gaga over it..the story was covered frantically in both print and electronic…which one can easily understand why. With the mad rat race for TRP’s, poor media is not to be blamed.
What dismayed me was when an English news channel hurled out comparison games on their prime time. In the backyard of our colossal nation, diverse is the nature of the news. So on a single day images from two different worlds of ISB and Nashik were flashed…ISB graduates procuring a whopping 1 crore plus package and a farmer in Nashik committing suicide after failing to repay a meager debt of Rs 25,000.
For me, at least, unfathomable was the fact why did the media tried to bring about a comparison between incomparable chunks of news. They projected the poor (oh! Sorry, Rich) MBA grads as villains responsible for the suicides, which was horrendous. Economics was mixed with emotions!.
Farmers committing suicides is an altogether different matter. The shoddy policies of the Government and its inability to implement them are to be blamed.
When we hear of graduates getting crores we should rejoice being at par with the Harvards and Oxfords. Those with these burgeoning pay packets are the ones who have slogged their way into the mecca of management studies and they very well deserve it.
Today India is shining for few but with the growing economy, huge FDI, immense employment opportunities within the country the day is not far away when it will shine for one and all.
