In 1999, when we were selecting which MBA insti to go to, it was a tough call. Finally, IIM Calcutta was selected purely on gut feel.
We have a T Shirt that goes "The best daze of our lives" with a picture of the tree under which countless dreams are woven at the insti. Its a famous tree. That phase pretty much sums up the experience at IIM Calcutta.
The studies are difficult, obviously, and getting in is the easiest part. But more than that, this is the insti that turns worshipers of Mammon into introspecting people wanting to find out their mission in life, instead of a corporate mission statement. That is what I like about IIM Calcutta. It inspires introspection. It gives you room (literally) to grow, to think, to pursue your interests without worrying too much about what is expected out of a B School grad.
We get no grooming courses, no public speaking lessons and no courses that teach us how to market ourselves in the corporate world. All we get is a rigorous curriculum, a lot of theoretical grounding that is hard to find outside, peers whose intellect zaps one at first, and then becomes a habit(all the way until you hit the real world and suddenly realize what you are going to miss) , and an alumni network to die for.
You should go to IIM Calcutta only if you want to do more than just get a high paying job (thats a given) and if you want to feel like a student again.
