After having used a Videocon fully automatic top loading washing machine for 10 years, I was ready for my first front loading machine. Not that the Videocon had been a bad experience ( I had called the service centre only twice during the ten year period), but the desire to upgrade led me into buying a front loading.
Since IFB is the oldest established player in this segment, I decided to go for IFB and bought a 6 KG Digital model (because it was the best of the lot!). It cost me Rs. 27, 250/- in Bhopal in May 2006.
Let me now explain the quality of the machine. Its just horrible. The machine is supposedly 6 KG but is not able to handle anything more than half of that load. Go close to even 4 KG and the machine begins to malfunction. During the first three months, I had to call the service centre. The reason, the machine was not able to handle the humidity during the rainy season in Bhopal. Think of what would have happened in Mumbai. The drum just kept moving in one direction. No tumble effect. Even after a visit by the service engineer, the problem remained. Then the control knob broke (Cheap plastic!). Thereafter, on many occasions, the water inlet just doesn't stop when it should and the drum filled up so much that the door opended on its own during a wash cycle.
The problems are so unpredicable that there is no guaranee you will be able to show them to the service engineer when he visits. Now the machine has started making horrible sounds during operation as if the belt that moves the drum has come loose. I don't know when this machine will stop working again. Thankfully, I had not given the old Videocon in exchange while buying this machine and now I am thinking of getting that machine serviced to use as backup (so much for an upgrade!).
Now my only regret is not having bought an LG or Samsung where I would have got true international quality instead of this IFB Junk. But alas! Its too late now!
