IDBI bank has shortcomings

We have had our accounts in IDBI Bank, New Delhi for a very long time. Earlier the staff was nice, friendly and helpful. Since the advent of online banking, my visits to the branch have minimized and the old staff has also got transferred.


Website is good. But in case I forget the password, I've to visit the branch. Earlier password could be generated via link on email. Even now, to have the password generated online, I should have IDBI ATM card. But then I don't want to have one. There are already too many cards of other banks with me. My IDBI account is not much in use.


Recently, I came to know that IDBI allows online transfer of only Rs. 50, 000/- and below. For higher amounts, I have to visit the branch. This is such a ridiculous condition in these modern times. Thankfully, my other bank accounts, let me transfer online, much higher amounts.


Once, I visited the branch with my mother, to get her FD renewed. The lady attending to us, advised to invest our entire FD amount, in IDBI Federal Policy, for a better return. There was a 3 year lock in period. I told her repeatedly that the FD amount was all we had. Yet, she fixed our total FD amount, as the yearly premium for the next 3 years. She said she was mentioning it on our policy and hence, nobody would bother us for the next 2 premiums. We trusted her, agreed and got trapped. We were harassed by repeated calls from Federal Policy staff, demanding further premiums. Of course, we never paid the next two premiums. But after 3 years, we got a much lesser amount, after a rude conversation from customer care of IDBI Federal people over phone. If only we had not listened to that bank lady, our FD would have given us a much higher return in the same 3 years.


I even incurred losses in IDBI Mutual Fund. And they don't have many ATMs.


I had a very old, simple to remember customer id for Demat. During later years, when I decided to have a saving a/c too, instead of opening it under same customer id, the new employee issued a new, lengthy customer id, that was too difficult to remember. He was even questioned by his senior, as to why he did it, unnecessarily and complicated the matter.


Years ago, I took our Aadhaar Cards to the branch as per Govt. norms. The lady employee said I was really not needed to do it, as it is for BPL i.e. below the poverty line people. I agreed, later I received SMS from the bank to provide Aadhaar details.


My conclusion is, IDBI online banking is ok(besides the low limit for online transfer), never listen to IDBI staff and their advice. Always use your own judgement.
