Whitney Houston is a fantastic singer. Her voice is probably one of the purest ones you'll here in the business. Although she has a fantastic voice, her albums are not always consistent all the way through. I'm Your Baby Tonight is an example of how a great voice can elevate subpar material.
The opening track is definitely one of her best fast songs ever. The music is very engaging and her voice is in top form. Ranging from a clear, unbelievable note to a well timed growl ''I'm Your Baby Tonight'' shows off everything that makes Houston one of the world's best singers.
''My Name is Not Susan'' is another highly synthesized track that has some spunky lyrics against its decidedly early nineties programming. I like this song even though today it sounds pretty synthesized and fake.
''Miracle'' is a beautiful song about the miracle of life and love. Some people considered this a song against abortion. Maybe it was, maybe it wasn't. Her voice is so strong and passionate and the lyrics are very meaningful.
''After We Make Love'' is a sappy ballad that is saved only by the unadulterated quality of Houston's voice. I definitely think the producers of this album could have found a more suitable ballad for such a great voice.
''We Didn't Know'' is a duet with legendary Stevie Wonder. This song was not one of my favorites at first but it does grow on you after awhile.
I feel there are some unforgettable songs on this album. Unfortunately, there are also some pretty forgettable ones as well. I have to detract a couple of stars for the lazy material and the mismatch of songs with her capability. This album defines the word filler.
If you like this album, I suggest other early nineties fare like Karyn White, Pebbles and Mariah Carey.
