I have studied and read reviews extensively for 4 months on small segment cars and finally bought Santro LS in Aug 2002.
The most important things I looked at while buying the car was
1) Comfort for the driver (I am tall) & passengers
2) Mileage
3) Maintenance, service & cost of spares
First I looked at ZEN, Alto, VagonR. ZEN is a good car liked by many and excellent service network. But I felt pretty uncomfortable for driving and even getting in and out of the car. Where as Alto is pretty small than ZEN with cramped interiors so there is no question for me to look at it. The VagonR is spacious but decided against it due to its height (bit taller than santro) and mainly due to its small bonnet (longer bonnet is safer for head on collision type of accidents). I didn't want to buy diesel engine car so I didn't looked at Indica. Any way I didn't like the looks of Indica & Matiz to consider them.
So I have given try with santro and I am not regretting my decision. Here are the things I find good about this car.
1) Great space and feel inside.
2) Can easily get in and out.
3) Gives pretty decent mileage (currently giving me 13kmpl, after first free service & second is due this month).
4) Good pickup and power (1.1L)
5) great visibility for the driver all around
6) Good AC performance
7) I love the big elephant ear driver side mirror which gives you great detail of traffic behind
8) With power steering you can have very comfortable driving
9) Got good service network and spares are cheap compared to any other small segment car
Bad things:
1) The build of the car seems to be ok, but if some one hits the door with hand (with some
force) I guess u will end up with a dent (from a friends exp).
