I have a Dec-99 model of Santro LP. I have done about 54000Km and am an extremely satisfied user. The car has been part of the family and everybody just loves it. I am now looking for a c+ sedan but we have decided to retian the Santro due to its non-troublessome nature.
In the first 3-4 years, I have had no repairs, no breakdowns at all. Just the basic servicing and maintenance. I am diligent about these things and do not miss any service schedules though.
In the 4th year, I had to replace a breakshoe identified in the routing servicing(cost me Rs. 800) and then it stalled once due to overheating and it was identified that the automatic mechanism of the fan had blown up and it was luckily in the city. Promptly fixed. No issues.
In the 6th year, I have had couple of instances where the car has jerked and stalled. I have tried to get to the bottom of things and figured out that engine and car are perfectly ok. Its the petrol dealers who provide adulterated fuel who are to blame. The fuel pump was clogged and I beleive the fuel pump cleaning comes in the 60000 Km service. My request to Hyundai is to do this at 40000 Km or something like that. I now get the whole fuel system cleaned to remove all the junk and then things should be fine.
In terms of space, it is very spacious in front and can be a bit cramped in the rear - depends on the height of the people travelling.
If you are in a city like Bangalore with monster speedbreakers, buy this. It doesnt scrape anything wherever you go even with 4 people in it. I have had just 2 scrapes in 6 years, one on a non existent road with cement slabs across it and another on a monsterous truck speedbreaker with 5 people in the car.
Overall a very positive experience. Anybody thinking twice over a car in this category, go for it, you will not be disappointed.
