I own a US version of the Elantra which I believe has the same engine, 2.0 liter, as the Indian one. I have been a loyal owner of Toyotas, but decided to try a Hyundai, since they are on the inexpensive side and Toyotas don't usually come with the standard options you get with the Hyundais. Well, besides standard air conditioning and adjustable seats, there are other items included in that come standard in the Elantra like side air bags, casette player radio, etc. Sometimes I think I should have kept with Toyotas. Why? Well, for one reason the fuel efficiency is a little bit disappointing. Considering the engine is suppose to be a VVT(variable valve timing), you would expect better mileage than averaging only 25 miles per gallon in the city, or less if I am really heavy on the gas. And I am using a manual transmission. How much worse would it be using the automatic. Also, the lack of throttle response and acceleration are also disappointing. You have to get up in the higher rpms for the motor to really take off. However, the car has really good road manners, is roomy and very comfortable. The car has a very solid feel on the road, and absorbs bumps and ruts well. It is also one of the most quiet cars I have driven in per this category of sub-compact. All in all, I think I would go back to Toyota next time. Their engines delivers much better performance and they have a much better reputation. Despite Hyundais 100,000 mile engine and powertrain warranty and life time road side assistance, compare with Toyotas 36,000 mile warranty, I think Hyundai has a ways to go in conquering the economy car segment. If fuel economy and performance isn't much of an issue to you, and you want a real comfortable car for the long drive, I would go for the Elantra. Otherwise 5for the Yaris or Corolla.
