Hyundai has come a long way as a manufacturer. From being considered as a budget brand to being able to sell cars well above Rs 10 lakh in huge numbers is a testament to the quality of products the Korean manufacturer has delivered. The Elantra which was launched in 2012 was a surprise package too. Although selling just in three digits, it was for a while the best-selling sedan in its segment. That meant Hyundai was able to beat heavy weights such as Skoda, Volkswagen and Toyota at their own game. Now, four years down the line, the brand new Elantra has arrived and it looks even more impressive and promising than the car it replaces.
We won’t blame you if you find some design cues similar to that of modern Audis. However, according to the folks at Hyundai, these sharp creases, the pentagonal grille and flowing lines belong to the Fluidic 2.0 design language. Nevertheless, the face looks imposing and improves the overall design’s cool quotient. The headlamps are now HID and come with their own distinctive DRLs.
The Elantra is available with both, petrol and diesel. The diesel is a carryover from the previous Elantra – a four-pot, 1.6-litre turbocharged unit. It develops 126bhp and 260Nm of spin. It’s extremely drivable and offers fairly linear curve of power delivery. The turbo lag is well contained but the engine comes in its form only past 1, 800rpm, and stays that way till 4, 000rpm. This engine is either mated to a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. Like the engine, the gearbox too is a carryover from its predecessor. It’s the torque converter type, and it’ll be wrong to compare it to a dual-clutch’s performance. But, if you aren’t expecting sportscar-like shifts, it should do the job just fine. The manual has slick shifts and short throws that allow quick gear changes.
