Don't get too excited by seeing the title. ''Hungama'' is definitely not a
match for hera pheri. But it is a very good film nevertheless.
Hungama is the story of a village girl Anjali (Rimi Sen) who comes to the city as she was being forced to
marry a zamindar's son as her mother had not been able to repay the loan the
zamindar had given her father. In the city she finds a room to stay, but she had to be
married in order to get that room. So she and Nandu (Aftab) rent the house
pretending to be husband and wife.
Now Radhesham Tiwari (Paresh Rawal) is a rich industrialist who stays in his village, but shifts to his home in the city. His wife is
also named Anjali.
Jeetu (Akshae Khanna) starts a business of electronic goods by stealing money from his kanjoos father, who also happens to be Tiwari's lawyer. Jeetu
thinks that Anjali (the younger one) is tiwari's daughter. She also says so in order to
get a job in his shop. This lie starts a tremendous comedy of errors Jeetu used to drop
anjali at tiwari's house after work. Seeing her at the house, tiwari's wife suspected
that he was having an affair with her. On the other hand, tiwari, seeing that
Akshaye Khanna often came to his house and enquired for Anjali, thought that his
wife was having an affair with him.
A number of other parallel stories are also running alongside. Anjali's original suitor, the zamindar's son, comes to the city. But Aftab
makes him believe that anjali, along with a dreaded don ''Chhota Chetan'', is
planning to eliminate him. He hides in a small hotel.
Tiwari's city home was used by a guy, posing as tiwari's son, to get his girlfriend's father Kachra seth(Shakti
Kapoor) to agree to his marriage with her daughter. Now that tiwari is in the city ,he hides in the same lodge.
Kachra seth comes to Tiwari, and their is a big quarrel. His wife now suspects that tiwari has a son outside his marriage. Tiwari tries in vain
to make her believe in him.
This was the story in short. But this tells nothing much about the movie. The comedy scenes has to be seen and not read about.
The scene in which jeetu comes to tiwari's house to ask for anjali's hand is superb. So is te scene
in which kachra seth comes to the lodge and goes to the wrong room.
The performance of the cast was good in general. Paresh Rawal was brilliant. Akshaye
Khanna was good. Rimi Sen looks good and is impressive in her debut film. Aftab did
not have much of a role, but is ok. Shoma Anand , as tiwari's wife, disappoints. The
dialogues are excellent, especially the ones delivered by Rawal and Khanna.
However the film has a number of negative points.
1) The music is not up to the mark.
2) The director forgets to wind up some of the stories he created. Like Aftab being the son
of a rich man (revealed at the very end). Also what happened to Kachra seth's
daughter and his lover.
3) Aftab is sooooooooo lucky. He is responsible for anjali's fall which sends her to the hospital, and then
cares for her and bingo. he is in love with him. Nice way to win a girl. I now know
why the standard bollywood fare of the hero hiring goons to atack the herne and
then saving her, works so effectively.
The first half of the film is a bit boring but the 2nd half is great.
Overall, the film is worth watching.
