To be honest, I didn’t quite feel confident about Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania after watching its theatrical trailer. It gave an indication of a beaten-to-death tale and that too shoddily directed. Thankfully, all my doubts were put to rest! Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania borrows from lot of films but still has some surprising and unpredictable moments. And it is very well directed and it’s witty and funny dialogues are like icing on the cake! And as expected, Varun Dhawan-Alia Bhatt look great together!

The story of the movie: Rakesh Sharma aka Humpty(Varun Dhawan) is a vella from Delhi, but with a heart of gold. He comes across Kavya(Alia Bhatt) who is all set to marry an NRI, Angad(Sidharth Shukla) and who is in the capital city for her wedding shopping. Although Humpty finds out that Kavya is ‘marriage party’, it doesn’t hesitate him in befriending Kavya and also trying his luck. However, he soon falls in love with her. Kavya too develops feelings for Humpty. But she realizes that their love story might not materialize. After all, her marriage is just few days away and Kavya’s authoritarian father(Ashutosh Rana) is dead against love marriages.

Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania has a breezy and fun-filled first half. The protagonists and their back stories are very well put forward and the scene where Humpty and Kavya meet for the first time is hilarious. The fun continues as the duo spends time with each other. The scene where they teach a lesson to Bhanu(Jimmy Viryani) is too good. The intermission point is a real surprise. The scene immediately after the intermission is well thought of and kudos to the director and editor for not wasting time on unnecessary details! Moreover, it is no secret that the film is inspired from Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. However, don’t expect Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania to be a carbon copy of the iconic film. In fact, there are scenes where one might feel that the film is going the DDLJ-way. But suddenly, the film takes a sudden turn and the viewers will be in for a surprise! The chemistry between Varun and Alia shines in this hour. In fact, the scene where Humpty talks to Kavya outside her window is lovely and very memorable. The sequence at the railway station is easily the best part of the movie! However, sadly, the climax doesn’t quite make for a great watch. It is unexpected but writer-director Shashank Khaitan could have thought of a better culmination perhaps.

Varun Dhawan proved that he’s a massy hero with his second film, Main Tera Hero. And he confirms the same with Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania. He’s confident and delivers a stupendous performance that will surely be wholeheartedly accepted. The actor is doing great and at this rate, he’ll surely be the next superstar in a couple of years! Same goes for Alia Bhatt. She’s getting better with each film and with Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, she gets to essay a very vibrant but at the same time vulnerable character. And she comes out with flying colours. And not to forget, the chemistry exhibited by the two is electrifying, which make the goings-on even more fun!

Newcomer Sidharth Shukla doesn’t get much scope but performs very well. Here’s hoping he gets more screen presence in his next film! Ashutosh Rana comes on screen after a hiatus and rocks the show and how! He instills fear in some of the crucial, serious scenes but at the same time, one is amazed as to how adorable he looks in ‘Daingad’ song. Sahil Vaid(Poplu) raises laughs with his antics and funny liners. Gaurav Pandey(Shonty) looks great and makes his presence felt. Mahnaz Damania(Swati, Kavya’s sister) leaves a mark. Guncha Narula(Gurpreet) is fine. Kenneth Desai(Humpty’s father) and the actor playing Kavya’s mama are nice in their small roles. Jimmy Viryani and Shivani Mahajan(Chibber ma’m) raise laughs. Others do a good job as well.

Music on the whole isn’t that great but is well utilized and most importantly, well shot. The best of the lot without doubt is Samjhawan followed by Saturday Saturday. Daingad is very well executed. John Stewart Eduri’s background score is energetic. Same goes for the choreography. Neha Parti Matiyani’s cinematography is eye-catching. Production design is appealing yet realistic.

Shashank Khaitan’s story is nothing new but his script and characterizations worked magic. Dialogues are another high point of the enterprise – simple but at the same time, funny and witty! Screenplay is apt, except in the climax. In fact, the finale spoils things to an extent. And his direction is simplistic and progresses at a fair speed – neither too slow, nor too fast. If Shashank continues to come up with such entertaining films in future too, he’ll surely one of the top filmmakers of Bollywood in no time!

Some of the best scenes:

  1. Kavya’s introduction

  2. Humpty meets Kavya for the first time

  3. Kavya parties with Humpty’s friends

  4. Kavya-Humpty teach a lesson to Bhanu

  5. The intermission point

  6. Kavya sees Humpty in the gurudwara

  7. Humpty meets Kavya’s father

  8. Humpty-Kavya’s secret meetings outside latter’s window

  9. Humpty-Kavya’s father smoking discussions

  10. Angad confronts Poplu

  11. Kavya breaks down in front of Humpty on the terrace

  12. The scene at the railway station

  13. Drama at the dhaba

On the whole, Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania is a completely entertaining and fun-filled ride. While the basic premise is inspired from Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, writer-director Shashank Khaitan adds his own twists in the tale that make for a great watch. Not only Varun-Alia, but every actor in the film performs very well. Climax, however, could have been better. But nevertheless, the film will surely give viewers an entertaining time. Go for it!
