Humko Deewana Kar Gaye, tackles the theme of love– an issue that has been witnessed on the Hindi screen since decades. Also, flashes of various old movies cross your mind as you embark on a journey called Humko Deewana Kar Gaye, but this film has its enduring moments – moments that you carry home even after the show has ended.
Automoblie engineer Akshay Kumar is engaged to Sonia ( Bipasha Basu ), a fashion designer about to make her mark in the field. As individuals, Aditya and Sonia are not on the same phase. Sonia is amodern woman for whom career comes first and she believes in changes.
Aditya has to leave for Canada to learn about the technique of a new car model, to be launched in India, while Sonia has to leave for Paris for a fashion show.
In between work, co-incidence or destiny makes him bump into Jia ( Katrina Kaif ) more than once. With passing time, they fail to realize when they start falling in love with each other. But a misunderstanding with Aditya and prior commitment with Karan makes Jia go back to India to get married with Karan. Aditya also comes back to India to get married with Sonia and does not attempt to meet Jia ever again.What happens next? Does Jia marry Karan or Aditya? Do Aditya and Sonia enter into wedlock?
Actually, Humko Deewana Kar Gaye has no story to talk of, but it's the treatment of this waferthin plot, the characters, the moments, the dialogues, the overall impact that makes it watchable.Like his earlier works, director Raj Kanwar has garnished it with sequences that are straight out of everyday life. Somewhere, sometimes, to somebody you know, you've seen it happen – and that's where the film works!
The first half of the enterprise covers all aspects that contribute to the making of a love story – the meeting, the affair, the marriage, the tiffs… In fact, the roller coaster ride in the first half is flawless in terms of writing, execution and interpretation.
There're moments that bring immense joy to the viewer, like the one during the car rally .Likewise, the emotional moments are hard to forget. Sequences like the one when Akshay talks about the moments they've shared, or Anil's entry into Canada, have been handled with elan.
But the pace drops in the second half. Also, the goings-on tend to get lengthy and cumbersome . How one wishes the editor would've used the scissors sharply to trim or even edit these portions! But still it manages to pull your heart strings and would prompt the delicate ones to reach for their handkerchief.
Undoubtedly, Humko Deewana Kar Gaye is Raj Kanwar's finest attempt as a storyteller. Not only has he extracted outstanding performances from the principal cast, he has also struck the right balance between light and emotional moments of the film – the two sides of the coin.The screenplay is equally gripping, though, of course, the second half could've been concise.
The music is a mixed bag – not great, not bad either. Amongst the tracks, Fanaa' and 'for your' stand out for their tunes, while the balance tracks range from quite good to strictly average. Cinematography is first-rate.
And now to the performances!
Humko Deewana Kar Gaye clearly belongs to Katrina Kaif . One actually runs out of adjectives and personifications if asked to describe this performance by the actress. She surrenders herself completely to the script and delivers a performance that is bound to be a big hit with one and all.Looks-wise too, she has never looked as gorgeous as in this flick.
Akshay slips into the character with amazing ease, proving that he's a reservoir of talent. Bips comes up with a fine performance.Anil is loud this time around Amongst character artistes, Bhagyshree and Helen stand out.
On the whole, Humko Dewaana Kar Gaye has several aces in its kitty – the light and emotional moments, the performances, the deft execution of the subject that makes you fall in love … But, most importantly, the film has tremendous emotional appeal to make the family audience throng the theatres.
