Am I Nuts??? . Review on Hum Tum

Or is it a miracle????.......................Well I will explain my dilemma, if you are wondering about it at this very moment?.. On your own sweet precious time!!!!!

Well, personally I think that it is a miracle?after a long time I have come across a movie that has not induced me to want to puke my guts out in disgust. After enduring third degree tortures like Mein Prem Ki Diwani Hoon, Khushi, Mujhse dosti Karoge and likes of such (Funny how all these movies star Ms. Kareena ?buy me some clothes? Kapoor !!!) I had almost given up watching Hindi movies.

But then I was dragged to see Hum Tum and surprise surprise?.I actually liked it. Now now there?.don?t shake your head?I know not many people agree here with me?but read on and let me make my case.

First the basic outline?Boy (Mr. Grown up Mama?s boy) and girl (Ms. Doing well now) meet on a plane on the way to the States!!! Pheli mulakat mein hi jhagda! Chalo Amsterdam ghoom ke aiyen hum (Sing in tune of Chalo Ishk ladayen) Auu ?Auu?

Well they meet over a period of 8 years (if I have calculated this right?.an Idle mind can do wonders!) and grow to like each other?. (Falling in love after they initially hate each other?..wonder where I have seen this story line b4??? I don?t think I ever have? How original!!!). Well on the way the girl (Rhea) gets married and her husband dies, the guy (Karan) flirts around a lot?..Karan tries to date Rhea?Karan tries to fix up Rhea with Mihir ( I think that?s what his name is) who inturn falls in love with Diana (who Karan is dating) and yeah they get engaged and in the engagement party the would be bride in a totally put on drunken state tells everybody the twist ??..

Disaster!!!! The heavens tremble and the earth splits open as Rhea walks away from Karan?s life. This prompts our cartoonist sorry former cartoonist (coz right now he is too busy playing matchmaker DUH!!!!) writes a book about Hum Tum. And just when he is walking away from all the journalists (that really really cared about his sad love story) he stops to see who calls out to him and lo and behold it is Rhea ?.and they live happily ever after???.. Sweet Mother of God.. there is justice after all?..and silly me I was thinking that typical to Bollywood the Hero Heroin will go their separate ways??.. But no!!!! the winds of change are blowing through at last?..The Hero and the Heroin are together for the first time, in-spite of all the odds!!!!!!!!

Well all sarcasm aside the thing I really liked in this movie that in-spite of all the intended twist and turns, the story was handled well. Thankfully it was not over the top (knowing the affinity of directors for the same) the little playful tiffs between Rhea and Karan bring a smile to your face (not always I admit).

Kiron Kher did a good job of portraying a typical lovable Punjabi mother, though I think that the puja thali thing in the airport was a little too much. Also the rift shown between the parents of Karan was well handled. And the thing that needs an applause is that the director managed to keep their reunion very subtle and avoided making it an over the top emotional affair.

Rani Mukherjee has done a good job of playing a girl who has lost a loved one and takes strength in the fact that she has to move along in her life. But the most commendable job has been done by none other than Mr. Khan? Surprising but true. After movies like Deewangi and a few unmentionables, he looked like he had no hope. But he Sun shown through and he has proved himself over and over again with movies like?. Pyar ke liye kuch bhi karega (His acting was the saving grace there), Ek Hasina Thi (He did an awesome job) and then this movie that he has managed to stay in character both as a carefree boy and a man in love.

Well all in all as I mentioned before? this is a movie that is worth watching once even for the intolerant many like me. The only desire remains that people out there (read directors) take the clue and realize that simple acting makes the cut too?....
