Oh those barjatiya's the sweet people. Kitni mithas hai unke filmo me. Well Hum Aapke hai kaun was no different. In my opinion, what actually had the movie become a hit was smart marketing in the first place. It was released in only a couple of theatres in Mumbai u know.
So this play generated curiosity amongst the movie goers, and soon, u had these serpentine queues outside the theatres to see the film. It was only after the film started that u as a viewer started squirming in your seats. But by then u were in and hooked to this overdose of sweetness, with a small dose of bitter chocolate in between.
Now lets get down to the story ???
Lets see what we have here..
1) Alok Nath as the goody goody uncle of two absolutely lovable ( yuck) boys. Todays Raam and Lakshman..Cho chweet. After apparently their fathers demise ( in all probability he wanted to be off, than be in the film)he was the one who brought them up.
2) Mohnish Behl as the elder brother..Boy you can see his discomfort at this sudden change of role. U can almost see his hands itching to have a go at both the heroine sisters, but alas he gets only one of them . As mister nice guy he is at his most uncomfortable role.
3) Salman as the younger brother, worshipping virtually licking the ground his brother walks on. Of course he has to meet a gorgeous girl .
4) The oh so schweet family friends played by
a) Ajith Vacchani and his family consisting of Bindu, trying to get her daughter?? Sahila Chadha ( is that her name?) to Salman. )
b) Satish shah and whats her name as the doctor and his paan chewing wife .
c) And this crazy guy who keeps seeing sahila chaddha as shakuntala.( a wee attempt at humor)
d) Of course loud comedy Lakshmikant Berde ishtyle, assisted by some person playing his leading lady .
5) Anupam kher, as Alok Naths long lost friend of yore. Another sweet and syrupy family to follow.
6) And Reema Lagoo( she played Salmans mother in MPK). Here too she is a sweet mom of two sweet and sweeter girls.
7) Renuka Shahane, as the sweet elder daughter, who falls for Mohnish the first time she sees him. Her grin ( showing off her set of whites) was seen a lot.
8) The other daughter Madhuri, doting loving etc. who takes time, but eventually falls for the lovable younger brother of the lovable family..
9) After all these human elements, time to bring in the real star. The pommeranian pup, who even plays cricket. o la dee la dee. He Bowls u over.
The story, if you call it that is as follows.
The lovable uncle decides to get the lovable elder brother married to an equally lovable elder daughter of his long lost lovable friend. That done, from the engagement ceremony to the birth of their child follows an overdose of songs - a la chitra geet ( the difference being that here they r all from the same film and have the same theme).
Then when, the going was smooth with the right pairs forming etc, the barjatiyas decided, that a little bitterness was required ( aur kaise twist laate yaar). So they decide to bump of Renuka Shahane ( going by her grins, she knew all along that it would happen and was happy about it-she couldn't take the grinning anymore ). Alas, Mohnish is stricken, but carries on bravely ( he too was tired of the smiles etc I guess).
Now, the twist they added here was the baby who ofcourse would require a loving mom, so lil sister has to take the job. SO the two younger siblings sacrifice their love etc and Madhuri decides to become principle nurse to the baby.
It is then that our hero decides to put his foot in. He runs up and down the house, and returns to Mohnish with a letter written by Madhuri to Salman ( clever beast). And so it happens that Mohnish with his head held high , mumbles about his younger brothers good qualities and helps them tie their knots.
Absolutely knotty what?
Hmm...I see myself getting a lot of flak for this review...
