Ever heard of a spicy men's fragrance. Review on Hugo

Writing reviews on fragrances can be challenging, but is nevertheless exciting if u love the fragrance....

Getting my hands on it

I must tell you that I have never been a perfume sorta person. The way I looked at it was that as long as I smelt nice and had one of those trusty gorgeous-smelling perfume with me, it doesen’t matter. I haven’t used many perfumes before except for Brut and Calvin Klein’s Masculine, which I had been using alternatively for the past 8-9 years. It all started last December when I went out with my mom to a perfume counter and browsed through the various perfumes there—Polo Sports, Guccis and a host of others—sort of liked them , but too strong for everyday wear. So strong were some of the fragrances that I tested, that I couldn’t smell Hugo’s Boss at the time when I was offered...I took some time, sniffed again and decided that this is the one I was looking for!!!

Packaging and Design

And Lo!! I got it as a surprise gift from my mother on the New Year’s. There’s nothing to write home about Hugo Boss’s packaging. The bottle comes in a drab grey-shaped box with a small bottle with its name drawn in the center...and I thought all designer perfumes had shiny packaging..anyways it’s the actual fragrance that matters, isn’t it? So I opened the box and found a butch shaped cutesy small bottle with a greenish-purple liquid and a screw off cap that makes it look like one of those old bourbon flagons. The bottle is thankfully easy to use and spray effectively (take a hint Gucci!) and adorns the Hugo Boss label in the centre of the bottle. The design in general is very classy if a little mundane.

Smell

Perfume, like love, is a science. If not because it’s a fragrance scientifically designed in a lab that can make some sneeze and others swoon, but because it is a science to pick a nice smell and know how to use it. Hugo Boss requires a little science to effectively wear it. While other perfumes make their smell so apparent no matter how little you put on – you can tailor Hugo Boss to your liking in any circumstance you may find yourself in.

First a small description of Hugo Boss, small because no matter how far science may go, reading about a smell will never be the same as smelling it.

Hugo Boss has a semi-sweet, semi-strong “manly” scent. Upon impact the smell spreads out and immediately spices up your world and those you come in contact with. The top notes for Hugo are Grape Fruit,Green Apple,Pine Needles,Thyme,Spearmint,Basil,Cedar leaves and Rum.The Middle notes are Jasmine,Sage,Geranium Leaves,Cloves,Lavendar and Cedarwood.The base notes are Moss,Fir Balsam,Sandal Wood,Vetiver and Suede.

It is a very refreshing and young,sporty smell.

It is not a strong scent unless you put a lot on, and is almost absent of that strong masculine scent that fragrances such as Brut and Calvin Klein’s Obsession thrive on. And, although it may have a slight sweet texture to it, the smell is absent of anything remotely resembling fruity – so you don’t have to fear smelling like a walking candle.

The best thing about Hugo is that is really is an all year round fragrance. A lot of fragrances should only be worn during particular seasons. The stronger ones during the winter and lighter ones during the summer. The main reason to abide by this rule is that during the summer your body sweats more which reactivates the fragrance throughout the day as you wear it. A strong one during the summer will become even stronger as the day passes since your body will sweat more. The opposite occurs during the winter, so it become necessary to wear a stronger perfume since your body will sweat less. This rule even applies if you prefer to wear your perfume on your clothes instead of your actual “perfume pressure points” (neck, back of the wrist) simply because sweat or lack of it will find its way through your clothes.

I’ve found that a quick spray on the neck and even quicker sprays on each back side of the wrist are effective. If I’m putting it on just my clothes, I’ll put more on and in some cases will use the “spray in front – walk into smell” method just to ensure that more of the particles reach more areas of my clothing. The most Hugo Boss I’ve ever put on without thinking of that self conscious thought that I had put too much on, caps off at about three full sprays. So a small bottle will last quite a while and of course an even larger bottle will last even longer.

Price

Price shouldn’t be a deterrent if you like a fragrance. Hugo Boss for men won’t make a big hole in your pocket (in London it costs £25-30), which in my thinking isn’t much for a designer perfume.

Summing up

I have found my fragrance for the coming years, and till now everyone that I have met, my girl-friends, cousins, relatives, they all have simply loved it. As for me, I would say this perfume goes with my personality....Its light, a bit fruity, and there’s a hint of elegance that I love about it...U know what, its overwhelming to get your kind of fragrance.

My advice would be, the next time u go to a perfume counter (do take a female along, she’s the best judge for a men’s fragrance), try out this one—it might be your kinda fragrance, who knows!!!!
