No doubt CAT is one of the toughest EXam in INdia apart from Civil Services. For CAT, preparation is more of a swift mode with 6 month sof intensive training. while you need to maintain your speed, preparation, you must maintain your focus and determination.
In CAT the focus is on your time and your quality speed. One must try to do as many as right answers as the exam has negative marking.
Regarding need for coaching, it is not that necessary, it give you a guidance and a time schedule but it is not necessary that one must join a coaching institute. To get an idea, one can have last years or second hand notes by going to some sites which sell these notes.
