I am writing this review after owning this CD for one year. Why so late? Well, I joined this website only a few days ago!
I am not going into how great U2 is and stuff, but delve right into the music behind this album.
After Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby, U2 were on a hiatus taking breaks from their normal style of music and ventured into Zooropa and Pop which were best sellers but not very U2ish. All That You Can Leave Behind is an album that brought them back to their roots with splendid songs like Beautiful Day, Walk On, New York, Stuck In A Moment and When I Look At The World. However, this is the definitive album that comes just after JT and AB.
Vertigo: the first song in the album just punches your gut with Bono's ferocity and Edge's strumming. At the end of the song you just wanna get up and sing ''yeah, yeah, yeah'' with Bono.
The other fast song ''City of Blinding Lights'' is the sequel to ''Where The Streets Have No Name'' and as such is now their opening song in live performances on their Vertigo Tour.
Ballads like ''Love and Peace or Else'', ''Sometimes You Can't Make It on Your Own'', ''Man and a Woman '', ''Crumbs from Your Table '' and haunting tunes like ''One Step Closer'', ''Yahweh '' just balance the album perfectly.
Miracle Drug is a typical Edge song and Original of the Species is the least likable.
If you haven't listened to U2 yet, then I suggest you start with this.
But own the Joshua Tree. It is one of the pillars of rock music.
