Let me tell you guys this book is so funny, a pleasure to read. This is not something called serious fiction but it will refresh your mind. The book tells the story of Opal, a teen she gets excellent marks in her high school education but gets rejected from Harvard University just because she did not have a fun life apart from her studies. Her family had devised a plan 'HOWGIH'(How Opal Will Get Into Howard) for this
purpose and Opal had carefully gone through this plan.
Author’s narrative style is elegant and she constructed the dialogues very interestingly.
A scenario goes like this.
Opal was going with the admission officer and hears her father calling her from behind.
‘And Opal, don’t forget to PISS’.
The admission officer gets confused and Opal suddenly explains what that PISS was,
She says ‘It stands for Positivity, Intelligence,Sophistication,Success’.
The problem crops up when the Harvard admissions officer asks ''What do you like to do for fun?'' and Opal gets upset. And later a new plan 'HOWGAL' (How Opal Will Get A Life) springs into action which produces wonderful results.
'Kavvya''s style is very impressive and this is her debut novel. 'Kavvya Viswanathan', a south Indian origin became the youngest author signed by Little Brown and Co. There is much hype regarding this book and some readers found out some passages that are similar to a book 'Sloppy Firsts' a novel by Megan McCafferty. Later Kavvya said that the similarities happened unknowingly. Considering the style and freshness of this novel, we can forgive her for those unknowingly happened similarities. Right guys?
