This is a rather interesting development.
Hotstar – the entertainment service backed by Star India – has now evolved into a pretty neat thing. And I guess it’s all thanks to Netflix.
For a significantly lower price of Rs.199/month(compared to Netflix’s Rs.650/month), Hotstar offers an HD-service(Netflix‘s non-HD service is priced at Rs.500/month) and more importantly, it offers some of the most-popular TV shows currently airing. The list is of course led by Game of Thrones(in fact, most of Hotstar‘s ads are led by this show!) and also includes other HBO shows like Silicon Valley(whoo-hoo!) and Veep, all uncensored. That’s a really good deal, considering the fact that a pack of HD channels on TV costs more per month offering censored versions of these shows.
The movie catalogue is also pretty impressive, although I haven’t paid much attention to the list so far.
The service does have one big negative issue and it is that it is not compatible with Chromecast. So the desktop/app cannot be cast on to a TV, at least not directly(the workaround to this isn’t very efficient)
I’d say that if you can afford it, a subscription to both Hotstar and Netflix can help confidently cancel your cable TV subscription.
