We visited Pondichery this weekend and it was blissful. We drove from Chennai and had rooms booked at Hotel Surguru. We reached there around 12.30 and there were many people in line to check in before us! But the staff handled it well and soon we were off to our rooms and settled in.
The room was nice and just what I would expect for 890/- per night. AC worked well and the linen was crisp. The cupboard was clean and smelled nice. Our only kvetch was about the loo. you see, it refused to flush :-(
We did complain to the manager and a guy came in to check. He fiddled with it for awhile and then told that it was beyond his capabilities and had to call in the plumber. It being the pooja hols no one came and we were left with pouring buckets of water to flush. Wasnt much of a trouble. Just a minor annoyance.
We had lunch from the restaurant inside the hotel and it was quite good. I would recommend it. We went out for awhile and they were giving out city maps in the reception. I LIKE that :-) We like to walk around a lot and having the map helped us a lot.
The hotel is close to many attractions in the city but if you are looking for a sea view, this is not it. We slept in and went to see more of the place next morning. And what do you expect after you come back to the hotel? That the bed is made and trash is cleared and that general housekeeping staff have been busy. No such thing :-(
That was one thing I didnt like at all about my stay. We even gave the keys to the people in the reception telling them it was so housekeeping can work (I believe they should have the master key or whatever and do it anyway!) but nope, nothing was ever done.
Ours was but a short stay and there wasnt much trash. But I like my bed to be made so I did it myself with hubby's help.
Booking is necessary. We booked 2 weeks ahead.
There wasnt enough parking space during the heavy rush holiday weekends. We did manage to find a spot everytime we needed one though.
Not recommended to anyone who wants a room with sea view
Almost all tourist attractions are closeby, which is a plus
They asked us for an advance of Rs. 2000/- during check in. Am not sure if this is usual. While we checked out, the person checking us out confirmed with us again and again if we'd paid in advance. We showed him the card slip and then they went back to check their records to find the payment.
Overall, I enjoyed our stay because I dont go postal over tiny issues and let them make my holiday become stressful. I had a wonderful time in Pondi and hoping to go back soon.
