When my wife and I decided to spend the new year in Ooty, Sherlock emerged as a popular choice since we also had to keep in mind the requirements of our 20 month old kid and Sherlock did not disappoint us. We stayed here from 30th Dec 08 to 1st Jan 09 in a delux room. Since we were driving down to the hotel, the apparent distance of the property from the town was not a major factor.
The property is away from the crowded Ooty twon and is fairly maintained with decent rooms, a good theme of 19th / early 20th century european homes and the Sherlock Holmes story provided the added "masala". A well maintained garden with lawn and the surrounding view of valley and greenery was great and provided the ideal settings for relaxation and spending time with our kid.
The hotel staff lead by Shiva are friendly and go the extra yard to ensure the comfort of the guests. We had our room shifted to suit the needs of our kid and also the staff was able to provide hot chocolate for him even at very early hours.
The new year bash, which was part of the package, was a well conceived event. The food court was excellent with a wide spread and the music was cool. The staff manning the counters could be better trained for such events sicne they often looked lost
The food we ordered for snacks and for dinenr was fairly good, however the breakfast menu can do with some improvement. The fireplace in the room was a welcome facility, expecially since Ooty was freezing in the nights during our stay
Overall a very good experience and I would recommend this place to people who want to basically chill for a couple of days.
