On a recent holiday we visited Shillong and were completely mesmerised by its beauty and cleanliness. For our stay we chose the only government property, The Pine Wood Hotel.
It was off season so there was very little occupancy and we were able to get a spacious executive room for INR 1400 for a night. The minute you enter the hotel an old world charm enveloped you, wooden floors, wooden pillars, wooden walkways, fireplaces. Very scottish, very royal.
The staff was warm and welcomed us well. Among the top two qualities of the hotel was the old world charm and immaculate cleanliness. We loved the bathrooms, basic toiletries were provided and we had running hot water.
After a nice shower we snuggled into the triple blankets before heading out for a walk to the famous "Police Bazaar". When in Shillong you must try the local cuisine. Namely - Chow and Momos. We had our stomachs and hearts full and for dessert we tried the Delhi sweetmeat shop for fresh and crisp jalebis. After browsing around for Bhutani/Nepalese fake shoes, clothes and DVDs we headed back for a nice evening back to our hotel. The hotel is right by the lake and you can hear water and bords all around.
As we setlled into the foyer, the staff prepared the room by lighting up the fireplace, a welcome coffee and white linen. All looks great after a long day of driving and roaming around.
The bar at the hotel is an attraction. Its almost like a country shack, all wood with wooden tables and chairs with minimum furninshing. Classy in its own way. After having a few drinks we ordered the food. The food was at best, average, but we didn't expect much anyway from a hill station. All requests for our infant baby regarding milk, warm water etc were promptly met.
Overall, I think the hotel will make you feel right at home. This should be the ONLY place you stay at when you are visiting beautiful Shillong.
